FIELD REPORT (2 Div - LDI - 0098) 31 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: KIM Che Do (23) Pvt
DUTY: Rifleman.
UNIT: 9th Div, 8th Regt, 6th Bn, 2nd Co, 3rd Plat, 2nd Sqd
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 29 Jan 51 at 12 KM S of HOENGSONG

2. ASSESSMENT:
Evaluation: PW was cooperative but information seemed to be limited due to his short length of service. Information received seems not reliable for PW is not too intelligent. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
PW deserted his unit at PYONGCHANG o/a 13 Jan 51 and was on his way home to YONAN-MYUN, CHANGKOK-NI when he and another NK soldier were picked up by UN Forces near HONGSONG.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Intentions:
When PW deserted his unit near PYONGCHANG, he heard the 9th Div was going to YONGWOL. PW heard 9th Div was going to engage in guerrilla warfare in the YONGWOL area.

b. Organizations:
PW knows of only 8th Regt although he heard there were three or four Regt in the Div. There were 500-600 troops to a Bn originally but when PW left his unit, there were only 300.

c. Weapons:
Weapons in PW unit, 6th Bn, were as follows: 12 mortars (20 men carried 6 rds each, loaded on 3 horses); 15 LMG ea Bn; 15 PPSH SMG (Plat Ldr only) (2 magazines ea), 1 M-1 rifle ea
Plat (80 rd ea) and others armed with Russian rifles (30 rd)

d. Evacuation:
Enroute from PYONGCHANG to HOENGSONG, PW observed wounded NK soldiers, in groups of 3~10, walking in the same direction as he was. PW observed these groups daily from 13 Jan 51 to 28 Jan 51.

e. Clothing:
Majority of the men in PW unit had winter jackets but no winter trousers. Some of them had no winter clothing at all.

f. Medical:
The Co CO told the men in PW unit to be very careful of typhus infected lice because of a typhus epidemic. No immunization for typhus.
Practically all the men in his unit were suffering from frostbite and many were left behind because they couldn’t keep up with the unit. About 3-4 men in PW Co had pneumonia but were given no treatment.

g. Food:
Food was scarce after unit crossed the 38th parallel.

h. Morale:
Morale was low due to lack of food, lack of sleep and no winter clothing.
