1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very vague and inconsistent. Information does not appear to be reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH: (as of 20 Jan 51)
Ⅰ Corps: 47th, 8th, and 17th Rifle Divisions, Recon Bn and other units.
8th Rifle Div: 1st, 2nd, 3rd Rifle Regiments, Culture Co, Medical Section, Signal Co, Military Band, Inspector Unit(), Recon Co, Liaison Officer Section, and the 8th Div Rear Hq.
Each Rifle Bn: 3 Rifle Companies, HMG Co, Mortar Co, Signal Plat, Medical Plat, Supply Platoon.
Each Rifle Platoon: 4 Rifle squads with 10 men each.
Recon Co: 3 Recon Platoons, Guerrilla Plat(督战隊) and Intendance Squad.
Each Recon Platoon: 3 Recon Squads with 9 men each.

PW heard from his Division CG, KIM, Bok Mun (金福文), 3 Dec 50, that approximately 10,000 troops had been placed in the 8th Division.
The Recon Company had approximately 30 deserters.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
8th Div Hq was at 41 Km South of NORYANGJIN (CS1954) 21 Jan 51 and the Recon Co Hq was at the same place.
3rd Regt of the 8th Div was located at SIHUNG (CS1446) 21 Jan 51.
47th Div proceeded from SEOUL to KUMPO (BS9965) 15 Jan 51. 2nd Regt of the 8th Div and other directly attached units remained in the same area where the 8th Div Hq was, training. PW heard that the 8th Div objective was SUWON, and the 47th Div objective was KUMPO and INCHON as of 15 Jan 51.
20 Jan 51 PW heard that two unknown Chinese divisions of the 50th Army were 8 Kms NW of SUWON and one other unknown Chinese Div of the 50th Army was 20 Km E of SUWON.
PW unit had never been in combat.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW conscripted into the North Korean “Volunteer” Army Sep 50 at SEOUL. During the latter part of Sep 50, approx 300 troops of the “Volunteer” Army left SEOUL on foot and via KAESONG, SARIWON, KANGSO (YD1416), SUNAN (YD3242), KAECH’ON (YD4798), and HUICHON (BV6968), arrived at CHOSAN (YF3624) 30 Oct 50.
The same day PW with other 300 troops were placed in the 8th Div. PW was assigned 2nd Plat, HMG Co, Training Bn, 8th Div 30 Oct 50. Received HMG training for 20 days at CH’OSAN.
20 Nov 50 the PW transferred to his present unit. 8th Div was reorganized at CH’OSAN 30 Oct 50 from former 8th Div and other troops. PW received infantry training in the Recon Co for 10 days. 8th Div left CH’OSAN 3 Dec 50. Travelled from CH’OSAN to SUWON, over the following route:

7. REPLACEMENTS:
No replacement were received in the 8th Div since it was reorganized at CHOSAN on 30 Oct 50.

8. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
8th Div personnel obtained food in deserted villages and towns. No ammo and food supplies had been received in the 8th Div since it left CHOSAN.
8th Div personnel received a winter uniform when they were at CHOSAN.
No other supplies were received.

9. SIGNAL:
Recon Co of the 8th Div had a wireless set and 2 telephones. The wireless was used between Div Hq and Recon Co. Telephones were used between Company and Platoon.

10. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale of PW unit was low because 60% of the PW unit were former South Koreans who did not want to fight their people. Also, hard forced marches at night and frozen feet were other factors.

11. MEDICAL:
60% of the 8th Div personnel have frost bitten feet. No treatment was received because of the lack of medical supplies.

12. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW did not surrender voluntarily but was captured.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets of hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. PW saw many UN leaflets which were written in Chinese, so, the PW could not understand them.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. Negative.
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. Negative.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. Negative.
