FIELD REPORT (2 Div-LDI-0081) 25 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: HAN Myong Jin (23) Pvt
DUTY: Rice Carrier

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 22 Jan 51 at YONGWOL (DS5415)

2. ASSESSMENT:

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
15 Dec 50 was told to carry rice for the NKA from his home in CHANGDO-RI (CT8464) to KUMSONG (CT7953). Was told at that time that he would be sent home after 3 days. Arrived KUMSONG on same day.
16 Dec 50 told to haul rice to KUMHWA (CT6539) arrived same day. Approx 2,000 males (ages 18-40) all carrying rice, gathered here and were assigned to various units in the area. They were told that they were now in the Army and would travel with their respective units.
1st Co was newly organized and consisted of approx 50 men t/o weapons, all carrying rice and 20 men with rifles (30 rd of ammo ea) to guard man carrying rice.
PW heard that there were approx 1500 troops in 1st Regt of 9th Div. 16 Dec 50 observed approx 20 CCF troops laying telephone line between KUMHWA and HWAOSON. Observed approx 10 spools of telephone wire. Wes told by Plat Ldr that there were many more OCF troops in the rear.
Walked through Mt during day and on road at night. Passed through HWACHON (CT8718), CHUNCHON (CS8992), HONGCHON (DS0271), HOENGSONG (DS1149), YONGWOL.
20 Jan 51 arrived vic YONGWOL and was told that they were going back N of 38th parallel and CCF would take the offensive. 1st Regt came back from YONGWOL with approx 250 ROK PW.
21 Jan 51 while the entire 1st Regt plus 1st Co and the 250 ROK PW were having breakfast in a village, they were strafed and bombed by UN air force. During this confusion, PW deserted.
