1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: HSIANG, Ying-i (向映義) (CCF)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and talked freely.
PW appeared in good physical condition and in high spirits.
PW had only short military service.
Although he was sincere in trying to answer questions, his replies were inconsistent and vague.
Information does not seem reliable.

4th Field Army: 50th Army and other armies.
50th Army: 148th and 150th Rifle Div.
148th Div: 42nd and 43rd Rifle Regt.
42nd Regt: 3 Rifle Battalions, Medical Co.
2nd Bn: 3 Rifle Companies, HMG Co.
4th Co : 3 Rifle Platoons, 60mm Gun Sqd.
2nd Plat: 3 Rifle Squads. 5th Rifle Sqd consisted of 12 men.

 Personnel losses were by battle casualties, desertions, sickness and reassignment of troops to different units (number unk).
 Equipment losses were chiefly from the troop reassignment.
 Equipment was usable.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES:
Prior to PW capture on 27 Jan 51, 2nd Plat of the 4th Co, dug in on a mountain (approx 12 Km West of SUWON CS2527) because of UN air attacks.
27 Jan 51, the 2nd Plat and the 4th Co were attacked by UN troops. During a one hour engagement, PW with 10 others of 4th Co were captured, 271200 Ⅰ Jan 51.
PW believed the entire 2nd Bn units were in the area 27 Jan 51.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW conscripted 10 Apr 50, into CCF at SSUCHUAN SHENG (四川省). PW was assigned to 5th Sqd, 2nd Plat, 4th Co, 2nd Bn, 42nd Regt, 148th Div, 50th Army, 4th Field Army.
Between Apr and Jul 50, PW received approx 2 months of basic training in SSUCHUAN SHENG.
Jul 50, 50th Army departed SSUCHUAN SHENG on boat and foot and arrived at HUPEI SHENG (湖北省) in the same month.
After approx 2 months in HUPEI SHENG, 42nd Regt travelled on train and arrived at CHILIM SHENG (吉林省) Nov 50.
After 20 days in CHILIN (Nov 50), 42nd Regt travelled on train and foot and arrived at ANTUNG (安東) Nov 50.
42nd Regt crossed wooden bridge parallel to Steel Bridge over the YALU River and entered SHINUIJU (XE1839).
PW did not know name places which the PW unit passed thru but remembered arriving at a mountain (approx 12km W of SUWON CS8374) 24 Jan 51.

6. PERSONALITIES:
LIM Piao (林虎), CG, 4th Field Army.

7. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
2nd Bn had not received food and ammo supplies from the rear after entering KOREA.
Food was mostly confiscated from farmers and deserted villages as they advanced S.

8. SIGNAL:
Field telephones used for communication above bn levels. Bugle in the 4th Co Hq used for assembling the unit. It has never been used in KOREA.

9. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale of PW unit very low at the present time because they had never been supplied with food, clothing and ammo supplies from the rear.
They greatly feared the constant UN air attacks.

10. MEDICAL:
Dysentery, malaria and boils were the most prevalent disease in PW unit. About 20% of PW Company were suffering from them.
There were very few cases of frost bite and frozen feat.

11. PSYCOLOGICAL WARFARE:

a. PW did not surrender voluntarily but was captured in battle.

12. TACTICS AND TECHNIQUES:
a. Marches
Routes of travel were mainly mountain roads. Marches were only at night. One column was usually employed while marching.
One guard from each plat used at halts. For every two hour march, there was ten minutes rest.

b. Bivouacs
Mountains with trees were usually used for bivouacs. One guard was placed on high points as a look out for UN planes and troops.
Each man dug his own foxhole.

c. Patrols
4 or 5 men formed a patrol when PW company travelled at nights. If enemy contact was made one runner reported back to the unit.
