About 7 men KIA in the PW Company were due to air attacks; 8 to 9 men had frozen feet.
The weapons in the PW Company were all in usable condition; Loss of weapons were due to bombings.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES:
2nd Bn of the 450th Regt, o/a 25 Jan 51, was occupying the highest hill adjacent to the YANGJI-NI (CS4825). CHUKSAN-NI(CS5904) Highway, approximately 3 Km Southeast of YANKJI-RI.
5th Rifles Co was deployed on highground overlooking the highway in the Southern sector of the hill.
6th and 7th Rifle Companies were located in the Northern sector of the hill facing the highway.
Heavy weapons companies and the Bn OP were located on the highest peak of the hill.
Bn OP was located halfway between the 5th Co and the OP.
The heavy weapons company was placed on the highest peak to provide supporting fire at the highway in the direction South to Northeast.
3-man foxholes were dug along the side of the mountain paralleling the highway. The interval between each foxhole was approximately 6 meters and about 15 meters West of the highway.
25 Jan 51 the 2nd Bn was expecting an attack from the Southern sector by US forces.
5th Company on the night from 23 Jan 51 until PW was taken prisoner on 25 Jan 51, moved from their defense position to a hill approximately 1 km East of the 2nd Bn area. The company usually spent the night at that bill and returned by daybreak. PW was told that his company, whenever going to this hill, was on a recon patrol. PW company did not construct foxholes nor defensive positions on this hill.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted Feb 50, at YINGKOU(營口), MANCEURIA and assigned to the 50th Army, 150th Division, stationed at YINGKOU. Between Feb 50 to March 50, the PW worked on a state- controlled farm.
In March 50 the 150th Division, traveled by rail to SSUCH’OAN (四川). In March 50, the PW Regt (450th) traveled by rail to HUPEI(湖北), for the purpose of working on a state farm. In Sep 50 the 450th Regt was transferred to ANTUNG. Upon arrival at ANTUNG, the PW Regt was sent to the outskirts of the city for the purpose of equipping themselves prior to departing for KOREA. After remaining in ANTUNG for about 8 days (early Oct) the PW Regt was joined by other elements of the 150th Division.
From ANTUNG the 150th division crossed the YALU River into SINUIJU (KE1039) undercover of darkness. The division spent the next day in the outskirts of SINUIJU prior to marching South. From SINUIJU the 150th Division marched only at night, using secondary roads and mountain trails, by-passing P’YONGYANG and SEOUL, until they arrived in the vicinity of SUWON (CS2428) on 9 Jan 51.
In the vicinity of SUWON the PW Bn regrouped then marched East over mountain trails, in single files, until they arrived at YANGJI-RI o/a 15 Jan 51.
Prior to arrival to YANGJI-RI, about 8 kms East of the town, the PW Battalion was attacked by UN Forces who withdraw after about an hour’s fire fight.
From YANGJI-RI the Bn marched 3 km Southeast, adjacent to the main highway extending South of YANGJI-RI (CS4823) for the purpose of constructing defensive positions.
25 Jan 51 the PW was returning to his Bn area from his group because of frozen feet. He was taken PW by a US patrol.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was not adequate in the PW Battalion. Since arriving at YANGJI-RI, the PW unit has had an average of 1 or 2 meals per day, depending upon the availability of food.
The PW Bn had not received a resupply of ammo since arriving in KOREA.
The troops have one set of clothing only. There are no replacement.
PW did not observe civilian clothes utilized in his Battalion but believes that Recon units have them.

8. SIGNAL:
For signal purposes between platoon and company; bugles, whistles and runners were utilized.
Between Company and Battalion and Regiment, wherever possible, telephones were used, besides, runners and horseback messengers were used.

9. MORALE:
Morale and combat effectiveness of the PW battalion was poor because of frozen feet, lack of proper clothing, and rations.
Many of the troops would like to desert the unit, but because they have no place to go they feel that if they continued to be with the unit they will at least have something to eat.

10. MEDICAL:
AN unknown disease that causes stomach cramps and vomiting.
About 10% of the troops were affected by the above mentioned disease and frozen feet.
No medical treatment was available in the PW Bn.

11. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:

12. TACTICS AND TECHNIQUES:
PW unit marched only at night and in single files. Their route of march was generally mountain trails that followed the roads. A 5 minute rest was taken every hour. When resting, guards were never utilized unless close to enemy territory.
There was no designated bivouac area along the route of march.
The place chosen for bivouac generally was an area thickly vegetated. In bivouac areas, foxholes were dug and camouflaged.
Foxholes were used for sleeping purposes and concealment against aircraft.
Patrolling is usually conducted to get information on enemy troop vehicular movements, etc.
Patrols were not used to make contact with guerrillas. Night patrols were used to get as close as possible or to infiltrate enemy territory for the purpose of getting information.
