Deserted his unit on 8 Jan 51 at YANGGU-NI and he was on his way home to WONJU when he was picked up by UN Forces.
38th Div consisted of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regts. Each Regt totalling about 900 men. Of these, 800 were SK and the remaining were NK:
PW heard from his Sq Ldr that the objectives of 38th Div were CHUNCHON, YONGWOL and KANGNUNG. After talking their objectives, they were to hold and protect these towns. PW was told by his Sq Ldr that 38th Div last objective was KANGNUNG and believes that this is their present locality.
Every man was issued winter clothing and no one suffered from frost-bite.
Food found in village was plentiful.
50 men from the 38th Div were suffering from typhoid. No death was recorded. Seven other men were suffering from an unknown type of communicable disease. (Symptom-high fever.) Medical facilities were very poor and men with typhoid received no treatment although they were kept separated from the other patients.
Morale was high in PW unit for they believed that victory for them was certain.
