2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but had a very poor memory, especially in regard to dates. Information seems fairly reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH:
4th Field Army: 50th Army
50th Army: 148th, 149th and 150th Rifle Div
149th Division (Code: 2ND BN): 3 Riffle Regiments (445th and others) and a Security Bn.
445th Regt (Code name 1ST CO, 2ND BN): 3 Rifle Bn, 82mm Mortar Co, Rocket launcher Co, Sig Co and Mountain Gun Plat.
Signal Company: Sig Plat and Recon Plat.

 The above equipment was with the units directly attached to the Regt. Others were with the Battalions of the 445th Regt.
Personnel losses were caused by casualties from ground combat and illness.
PW heard of few casualties from air strikes, but he did not believe they were in any great number.
PW Company (Signal Co, 445th Regt) lost all the wire it brought with the units from CHINA; but 50 rolls of abandoned US wire was picked up.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
PW was separated from his unit 9 Jan 51. Thereafter, he never saw any CCF or NKA units.
PW never heard the infantry principle of a MLR being adopted by the CCF. CCF units will retreat when confronted with superior force but will envelope the enemy if the CCF has superior force.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW conscripted into the CNA during Jun 47 at CHANGCHUN (長春) and assigned to the CNA 60th Army, 21st Div.
March 49, the CNA 60th Army defected to the CCF at CHANGCHUN. All troops (less officers) of the 60th Army assigned to the CCF 50th Army at CHANGCHUN March 49.
50th Army trained at CHANGCHUN until Oct 49.
During late 49 and early 50, the 50th Army engaged CNA units in the SSUCHUAN (四川) and HUPEI (湖北) areas.
50th Army arrived at ANTUNG (安東) during summer 50.
Oct 50, the 445th Regt, 149th Div crossed the YALU River into KOREA from ANTUNG.
After entering KOREA, the 445th Regt marched daily (during daylight hours until arriving at a place just north of PYONGYANG) through PYONGYANG and SEOUL. Dec 50, PW assigned to Signal Co, 445th Regt. PW was formerly with the 445th Regt, 3rd Bn, 8th Co.
PW was taken ill (malaria) and separated from the 445th Regt 9 Jan 51. PW was resting in a house when captured by US 65th RCT at CS 2824 on 29 Jan 51.
PW movements from 9 Jan 51 to the time of capture were in unfamiliar territory.

6. PERSONALITIES:
LIN, Piao (林彪), General CG, 4th Field Army (Also commander of all CCF in KOREA)
TSENG, Tse Cheng (增澤■), Army Commander CG, 50th Army (Formerly CNA 60th Army Commander)

7. REPLACEMENTS:
PW never saw or heard of any replacements which arrived or will arrive for CCF units in KOREA.
PW and two others from units in the 445th Regt assigned to the Signal Co, 445th Regt during Dec 50 as replacements.

8. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
Food procured locally. During the early months in KOREA, unit was supplied food from CHINA, transported by trucks, but due to UN air strikes was discontinued.
445th Regt was never supplied with ammo since entering KOREA.
PW wore the CCF winter uniform. This is the only clothing he has at present.
When it gets warm, PW would have turned in his winter uniform for a summer uniform.

9. SIGNAL INFORMATION:
During combat operation, telephone comm used by div hq and regt hq. Lower echelons used runners.
When not in combat, telephone comm used by div hq, regt hq and bn hq. Lower units used runners.

10. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale of the 445th Regt troops was low because UN aircraft restricted the movements of the unit. Belief that their weapons are inferior was also causing great consternation.

11. MEDICAL:
Malaria, dysentery, and other unknown diseases were prevalent in the 445th Regt. Approx 10% of the personnel were suffering from one type of sickness or other.
Malaria was first noticed after one month in KOREA. At present 20% of the troops in PW platoon were afflicted with malaria.
All personnel in the 445th Regt were innoculated once while in North KOREA.
PW heard of cases of frozen feet but never saw any.

12. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
PW was captured while he was resting in a house.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
Yes
c. Can you describe what they said?
“Why did you leave your beloved CHINA to come to die in KOREA? Who is responsible for it?“
d. What was your reaction to them?
PW wanted to be captured because he believed it.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
No.
