FIELD REPORT (521-MISDI-0378) 27 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: SON Jun Sun (先俊善)(ROKA)
RANK: Private 2nd Class

2. CIRCUMSTANCE OF RECOVERY:
Apprehended at CHUNGOLSAN (DR 4374) by troops of the 1st Bn 187th Airborne RCT with ten others on 260700 Jan 51.
All had been prisoners of a NK unit, eight of them captured at the time he was captured by the NK at OLSAN NI on 20 Jan 51. (His Sqd Ldr was murdered by the NK because of his grade.)
The enemy capturing unit said they were a guerrilla unit but at night he was billeted in a house with hospital patients, and when the doctor visited them he called out the patients’ names and organization. The 506th, 507th and 509th Regt were mentioned.
After capture guerrillas interrogated their PW asking name, organization ASN, home address, and their sentiments in regard to the war. They were then placed under guard. During the day the enemy dispersed into the hills S of OLSAN NI, and at night some returned to the village just S of OLSAN NI to sleep, others remained in the hills, and others conducted guerrilla activities. Every day indoctrination lectures were given to the prisoners.
UN Arty fire caused no casualties to this group from 20 Jan 51 to 26 Jan 51, and was not considered a danger, but they greatly feared air attacks, and although source never saw anyone killed by air, he heard two were wounded. On the night of 25 Jan 51 ten prisoners succeeded in escaping from their guard. When they escaped (1930) the entire guerrilla unit was assembled in the village, preparatory to moving S. The guerrillas moved out about 2000 passing through the mountains just E of Hill 1083. There were approx 1,000 troops in the group.
They were equipped only with small arms and ammo was in short supply. More than half were dressed in American GI clothing which they often covered with civilian clothing. The others wore only civilian clothing.
