1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared in good physical condition. He was cooperative but he lacked information because he was a former CNA and therefore was not informed about his unit.
Information seems reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH:
4th Field Army: 38th, 39th, 40th, 50th and 11 other armies.
50th Army: 148th, 149th, 150th Inf Div.
150th (Code No 3 unit) Division: 448th - Code Name 1st “CHENGTUI” (正隊), 449th, and 500th Regt.
448th Regt: 1st Bn - Code Name 1st Volunteer Unit, 2nd and 3rd, 60mm Mortar Co, Inf Bn.
1st Bn (Code Name 1st SHIGANTAI): 3 Rifle Co.
1st Rifle Co: Mortar Plat, 3 Rifle Plat.

448th Regt was a rear echelon unit and suffered no battle casualties. Majority of the men desired to surrender; the entire Mortar Plat voluntarily surrendered 26 Jan 51.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
448th Regt CP was approx 4 miles south of Hill #156 (CS3323) 27 Jan 51.
20 Jan 51 the 1st Co, 1st Bn, 448th Regt was to defend Hill #156. However, because the ground was frozen, no foxholes were dug nor other defensive preparation made. The same night, it was attacked by the Turkish Brigade and the 1st Co disorganized.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW was conscripted into the CNA 14 Dec 48 at SSUCHUAN SHENG (四川省). PW was captured by CCF 20 Sep 49 at HUPEI SHENG (湖北省). There, PW was selected because of his physical fitness, to join the CCF and was assigned to the 50th Army, 150th Div, 448th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, Mortar Plat. For about a year, PW was engaged in farming and did not undergo any training. He did not receive any communist indoctrination during that period.
O/a 20 Sep 50, PW travelled with the 448th Regt by rail to HUIANHSIEN (輝安縣), arriving o/a 5 Oct 50. Unit detrained here and recuperated for about a week and then travelled again by rail arriving at ANTUNG (安東) o/a 27 Oct 50.
448th Regt detrained here and on the fol day marched across the YALU River, arriving at SINUIJU (XE1839) that night.
The fol day, 448th Regt travelled south via mountain routes, arriving at P’YONGYANG (YD3825) o/a 1 Dec 50. On the same day, this unit continued its march south via mountain routes, arriving vic Hill #156 (CS3323) o/a 20 Jan 51.
27 Jan 51, PW voluntarily surrendered.

6. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
Food was obtained only through confiscation. 448th Regt received no new supplies of ammo or clothing. PW wore 3 suits of summer clothing under his quilted cotton coat and trousers, 1 fur-lined cap, 3 pairs of socks and 1 pair of tennis-type shoes, before he crossed the YALU River.

7. SIGNAL:
Telephones were used for communication between bn and regt; runners were used between lower units.

8. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale of 448th Regt was low because two-thirds of them were former CNA soldiers and had no desire to fight.
Long marches with insufficient amount of food and clothing were also important factors causing low morale.

9. MEDICAL:
448th Regt was vaccinated the day before it crossed the YALU River.
There were a few cases of frostbite, which were treated immediately by each unit’s medical unit.

10. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW surrendered voluntarily because he was a former CNA soldier and had no desire to fight.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. Yes.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. The leaflet asked him to surrender immediately and promised good treatment and food.
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. Negative.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts?
a. Negative.

11. TACTICS AND TECHNIQUES:
a. Marches - The 448th Regt, travelled at night via mountain routes only, in single column with no security because it marched only through secured territories.
b. Bivouacs - During the day, the soldiers slept under trees in mountains or in houses in deserted villages. Once, at about 2200 hr the 1st Co, 1st Bn, 448th Regt was attacked by UN plane. During the attack, the soldiers spread in all directions and none fired. Only two men were killed and none wounded.
c. The 448th Regt had no combat experience.
