2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative. PW was suffering from frostbitten feet.
Info is limited because PW did not know the routes followed by or activities of his unit. He was slow in answering questions and even then was uncertain about details.
Reliability doubtful.

2nd Bn lost approx 100 men as a result of aircraft attacks between 24 Nov 50 and 28 Jan 51. Approx 50 men lost between 27 and 28 Jan 51 as a result of attack by ROK troops.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
24 Nov 50, thousands of CCF soldiers marched south over mountain trails approx 12 km south of KUMHWA (CT6538). PW plat leader told him that there were 140,000 CCF solider in that area.
Objective of 29th Regt PUSAN.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW inducted into 29th Regt of 10th Div with from 400 to 500 others 24 Nov 50 at KUMHWA. They received no training and were issued no weapons or uniforms.
PW departed KUMHWA during the morning of 24 Nov 50 with 29th Regt, marched over mountain trails, and arrived CH'UNCHON (CS8893) o/a 5 Dec 50.
PW departed CH'UNCHON o/a 5 Dec 50, marched over mountain trails with 29th Regt, and arrived at a point approx 12 km north of OERYONG DONG 26 Jan 51. PW and 4 other recruits in his plat were issued US M-1 Rifles and 100 rd of ammo as they marched south over a mountain trail during the night of o/a 17 Jan 51.
Upon reaching mountains approx 12 km N of OERYONG DONG, 2nd Bn of 29th Regt attacked by ROK units early in the morning 27 Jan 51. Attack was repulsed after 2nd Bn lost approx 50 men.
28 Jan 51 PW secured permission from plat ldr to descend from the mountain on which the 2nd Bn was located to search for food in the villages of the valley. PW walked across the valley and climbed the next mountain, since he had decided to desert. He crossed this second mountain and walked into a small deserted village where he ate and spent the night.
On the morning of 29 Jan 51 he walked south to OERYONG DONG and surrendered to ROK Civil Police 291500 I Jan 51.

6. REPLACEMENTS:
24 Nov 50, at KUMHWA, the 29th Regt received from 400 to 500 replacements, untrained farmers conscripted from the village around KUMHWA. They received no equipment.

7. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
29th Regt personnel were fed two bowls of rice daily, obtained by confiscating rice from Korean villagers.
5 men of the 2nd Plat received US M-1 rifles and 100 rd of ammo per man o/a 17 Jan 51.

8. ARMOR, ARTILLERY, AND AIRCRAFT:
Two 62mm mortars of the 29th Regt were approx 12 km north of OERYONG DONG 28 Jan 51. He believes that these are the closest thing to artillery in the 29th Regt.

9. SIGNAL:
The 29th Regt has number of wireless and field telephone sets.

10. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
60% of the 29th Regt are recruits and have low morale because they are untrained, cold and hate army life. The remaining 40% are NKA regular soldiers who seem to have a high state of morale. Combat efficiency is poor because the recruits do not know how to fight. Efficiency is further lowered because approx half the 29th Regt are suffering from frozen feet.

11. US, ROKA AND OTHER PW:
Observed 1 ROK EM captured by the 2nd Bn, 29th Regt 28 Jan 51 approx 12 km north of OERYONG DONG. PW remained with the bn and was not guarded. He seemed to be regarded as a replacement for the bn and was not treated as a PW.

12. MEDICAL:
PW knows of no disease in the 29th Regt of the 10th Div.
No one had received immunization in the 29th Regt since PW joined it on 24 Nov 50.
50% of the 29th Regt suffered from frostbite, but being able to walk they are considered fit for combat. No treatment is given for frostbite.

13. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:

a. PW surrendered voluntarily because he was cold and did not like the NKA.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?

a. No.
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. Negative.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
