FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISD - 0225) 24 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DATE CAPTURED, PLACE: Captured 222100 Jan 51, at KALPYONG-NI (DR2471)
OCCUPATION: Farmer

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW had little tactical information and had very poor memory. He was not familiar with the area of his capture, hence he could not tell directions or distance. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization:
29th Regt composed of 3 Bn. 60 men in 4th Co.
PW inducted into the Army at KUMHWA 14 Dec 50 with 300 others. He was assigned to the II NK Corps, unk Div, unk Regt, 1st Bn, 4th Co, 3rd Plat. Receiving no training they left KUMHWA 20 Dec 50.
22 Dec 50, at the 38th parallel, near HWACH’ON, they met approx 1,700 other NKA troops. About the same time the PW unit was reassigned to the II NKA Corps, 10th Div, 29th Regt, 2nd Bn, 4th Co, 2nd Plat.
At TANYANG (DR3987) 9 Jan 51, they engaged an enemy patrol and dispersed them. Suffered no casualties.
14 Jan 51, approx 40 Km SE of TANYANG they were again engaged by the enemy. PW and 140 others were wounded and evacuated to a hospital in YANGJU-DONG (CR3179). PW and 50 others walked because of slight wounds.
17 Jan 51, the hospital was attacked by ROK troops and patients were dispersed through mountain trails until 22 Jan 51 at which time they came to a hill near KALPYONG-NI. About 2100 hours, PW and another comrade entered town and were captured by elements of the 5th Cav.
21 Dec 50, PW saw about 300 CCF troops bivouacked in a town 20 Km N of HWACHON.
The 300 who departed KUMHWA were unarmed. However, of the 1,700 whom they met, half were armed with M1 Rifles, carbines, Russian rifles, as well as 7 mortars (size unk).

b. Mission:
PW heard from his Plat Ldr they (he did not know whether it was Div, Regt, Bn, or Co) were to go to TAEJON and TAEGU.

c. Medical:
About 30 men in his Co had very bad cases of frost bite of the feet.

d. Clothing:
Only 40 men had regular issue army clothes. PW himself wore white civilian clothes.
