FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS FWD #3 - 0027) 25 January 1951

2. ASSESSMENT:
Physical condition - Right shoulder wounded. PW very cooperative and spoke freely. With the exception of dates in Nov-Dec 50, the report, as a whole, seems to be reliable.

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
14 Apr 50: PW inducted into the NKA at SUKCHON, PYONGNAM (平南 書川) and assigned to 10th Div, 27th Regt, Comm Co for two mo basic tng.
25 Jul 50: Upon receiving wpn and arms, 10th Div left for SEOUL by train.
o/a 30 Jul 50: 10th Div arrived at SEOUL (서울).
o/a 15 Aug 50: 10th Div arrived at a river bank of NAKTONG River (洛東江) 12 miles W of TAEGU (大邱) after marching 15 nights.
o/a 16 Aug 50: The 10th Div commenced establishing defense line on the west bank of NAKTONG River (洛東江).
o/a 16 Sep 50: After fighting continuous battle against the UN trp, the 10th Div was forced to retreat without even crossing the NAKTONG River (洛東江).
Oct 50: 10th Div arrived at HWACHON (華川) vie SOBAEK-SAN (小白山) and ODAE-SAN (五台山). The 10th Div set up a defense line at the 38th parallel. During defense the 10th Div had only a slight contact with the ROK 5th Division.
Nov or Dec 50: 10th Div crossed the 38th parallel and commenced pushing south.
10 Jan 51: 10th Div arrived at TONGNO-MYON (동노면). During this period, the 10th Div had a contact with ROK troops in three occasions and suffered light casualties. (The date and the place of battles unk).
11 Jan 51: 10th Div was attacked by ROK troops and suffered light to medium casualties.
12 Jan 51: PW and approx 20 patients were evacuated to YANGJI-DONG (양지동) (16km NNE of TANYANG)(丹陽). The main body withdrew N and by-passed TONGNO-MYON (동노면) on the E side and continued pushing south.
o/a 17 Jan 51: While in the field hospital, the ROK attacked YANGJI (양지). PW escaped from the hospital into the mountains and started southward to rejoin his unit.
23 Jan 51: PW was captured while in a villager’s house in TONGNO-MYON (동노면).

4. ORGANIZATION:
10th Div was under II Corps. 10th Div consisted of 25th, 27th and 29th and an Artillery Regt. Arty Regt had no Artillery and was organized in the same manner the Inf Regt. Each Regt consisted of three Rifle Bn, and one Arty Bn.
In a Bn were 3 Rifle Co, a mortar Co, and MG Co. Each Rifle Co consisted of 3 Plat, and each Plat of 3 Sqd.

5. PERSONALITIES:

6. WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT (as of 12 Jan 51):
27th Regt 7 x 82 mm Mortars, 5 rounds each
5 HMG, rounds unknown
12 or 13 LMG, rounds unknown
25th and 29th Regt believed to have same, or less. The majority of troops were armed with either M 1 Rifles, carbines, ARSH rifles, PPSH SMG. Each rifleman had 20-50 rounds of ammunition.

7. COMMUNICATION:
In the Regt Communication Co, there were more than 10 field telephones (Russian made, TAI - 43 type) with 8,000 meters of wire; one radio (Russian, LBH type), and two switch boards (Russian - KA - 10).
This Communication Co had 50 men that were divided into telephone platoons (無線小隊), radio plat (無線小隊), and operation plat (參謀小隊).

a. Field telephone:
With PTB - 7 wire they had, the range was 8 km. (PTB - 7 is seven strand wire).
Operated with one 1.5 Volt oblong shaped dry cell. (Capacity 24hr).
Butterfly switch on hand piece, press when speaking and release when listening.
Weight 5.3kg
Model 1943 - had very good audibility and readability.

b. Radio:
Weight 12kg
Antenna - detachable, five prong pin wheel antenna approx six feet long.

c. Switch Board:
10 key switch board, other details unknown.
Radio was not in use due to shortage of dry cell. As for field phone, there were just enough to go around for all phones. PW never saw this radio being used. Telephones were used between Regt and Bn. PW believes that there were some amount of communication equipment in the other Regt of the 10th Div.
In addition, each Bn has it’s own communication group that communicates between Bn and Co. Runners were used between Co and Plat.

9. SUPPLIES:
The 10th Div had no means of getting supplies. What they had were carried on troops backs. Food was obtained in villages.

10. ENEMY INTENTION:
There was a strong rumor among the men that the II Corps and one other unknown Corps were to go deeply into the enemy lines to infiltrate and set up road blocks. Once the CCF starts an all - out offensive these two Corps will attack the UN from the rear.
PW heard from a friend that the objective of the 10th Div had been ANDONG (安東) but was altered to TAEGU (大邱). His friend overheard a conversation between his CoCO and another Officer. This was before 11 Jan 51, which was the date the 10th Div first met resistance at TONGNO-MYON (동노면).

10th Div - TUMANGGAN (豆滿江)
27th Regt - TAEDONGGAN (大同江)

12. MEDICAL:
Wounded were evacuated to YANGJI (양지) temporary aid station (10th Div) in civilian homes. As of 17 Jan 51, there were approx 100 patients of whom all were troops from the 10th Div. However, PW believes that this aid station no longer exists because the attack made by the ROK troops in this area. There was one female Capt and three nurses. Medical supply seemed to be limited and the only medicines available were sulfadiazine, iodine and mecurochrome.

13. REPLACEMENTS:
PW believes the 10th Div never received replacements since the outbreak of the war. However, there was a rumor among the troops stating that the 15th Div was somewhere close to them.

14. MORALE:
The morale was low because of insufficient clothing, food and ammunition. The 10th Div had been fighting ever since the first part of the war and never had a chance to reorganize or re-equip.
