UNIT: II NK Corps, 10th Div, Arty Regt
DATE CAPTURED, PLACE: Captured while attempting to surrender at MUNGMYON (DR2166) on 25 2200 Jan 51.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and answered freely during interrogation. He was unable to produce tactical information because he was in a confused state of mind after being enlightened about the war situation and purpose. PW was a member of the propaganda group and has information along that line, therefore, he is recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit:
PW was in the II NK Corps, 10th Div, Arty Regt as a propagandist.
10th Div with strength of 3,000 men had the 25th, 27th, 29th Regt with 500 to 600 men each, and Arty Regt. Arty Regt had 360 men. In addition 10th Div had the fol attached Ind Bn of about 200 men each: Arty Bn, Security Bn, Med Bn, and the Rear Bn. There were 3 Bn of approx 120 men and a Chief of Staff Section of 4 officers, Propaganda Section of 8 officers, and from 5 to 15 propagandists in each Regt.

b. Chronology:
PW inducted into a Rehabilitation-by-Propaganda Unit constituted mostly of teachers, 21 Aug 50 at P’YONGYANG. He was sent to CHONJU to revise the school system in the communist pattern. He arrived at CHONJU 15 Sep 50, but was forced to retreat, 10 days later, to KARYOJU (CT2791) where the NKA was assembled and waiting to be reorganized. PW estimated there were about 20,000 troops there at that time.
10 Dec 50, PW and 2,000 others met and were integrated into 10th Div at HWACHON. When they departed HWACHON 26 Dec 50, there were approx 3,000 men comprising the 10th Div. The unit passed through NAEPYONG-NI (DS0399) 1 Jan 51 and arrived at YONGDU-DONG (DR4771) 12 Jan 51 over mountain trails.
At YONGDU-DONG about 110 men were hospitalized at a dispensary of the 10th Div, 60 of whom suffered from wounds while the rest suffered from sickness or frost bites. O/a 17 Jan 51, the 10th Div dispensary was dispersed by ROK troops.
PW and 60 others wandered around the mountains for a few days until they met a UN patrol which scattered them. PW was captured while attempting to surrender to the MUNGYONG Police Station 25 Jan 51 due to frost bite.

c. Other units:
Since 10th Div was the last Div to depart HWACHON for the TANYANG Area (on 26 Dec 50) he was able to observe 2nd Div depart o/a 22 Dec 50, 31st Div o/a 23 Dec 50, 6th Div o/a 24 Dec 50, and 9th Div o/a 25 Dec 50. The combined strength of these Div of the II NK Corps was estimated about 10 to 12 thousand men.
Originally when the 4th and 6th Div retreated from the NAKTONG front they were under the II NK Corps, however, around the latter part of Nov 50, the 4th Div was assigned to the IV NK Corps which was said to be somewhere on the west coast.

d. Weapons:
All troops of 10th Div were armed with either Russian rifles, SMG or Japanese rifles. Each soldier and approx 300 rd of ammunition.
Each Bn had 1 or 2 HMG.
While at HWACHON, 10th Div dug out three 75mm cannons and 150 rounds of ammo previously cached by the Div while in retreat. These however, were left at HWACHON because they could not be taken over the mountainous terrain through which they travelled and because the firing pins had been removed which could not be replaced.

e. Mission:
PW Regt CO stated on 11 Jan 51, the II NK Corps was to advance to the ANDONG Area. Its intention was to capture the town in that area and to disrupt the UN Forces by destroying roads, bridges, and its MSR. After the enemy’s MSR was cut and disrupted the CCF were to attack from the west coast and NKA main force was to attack from the east coast.
Sometime in Nov 50, PW was informed by the Corps Propaganda Group that an Assault Unit was newly organized and attached to each Div. It was said that these units were organized in the pattern of the CCF. The mission of each of these assault units was to infiltrate into the UN lines as spies dressed in civilian clothing.

f. Medical:
PW started about 20 members of his Div were hospitalized at YONGDU-DONG for frost bite and 30 others for illness.

g. Food:
Food was confiscated from towns and villages. While on the march each man carried as much rice as he was able to carry and ate on the average of 2 meals a day. While at halt between marches the troops confiscated all rice found in the towns or villages which was later rationed to the men. When not on the move one meal a day was eaten.
