FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS FWD #3 - 0025) 25 January 1951

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and talked very freely. Intelligence average, but because of his short period in service he lacked military information. Reliability - fair.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
o/a 21 Dec 50: Inducted at HWACH’ON (華川) and assigned to the 10th Div, 27th Regt, 10th Div, departed HWACHON the same day and arrived in NAEPYONG (內坪), (DS 0499) the following day.
o/a 24 Dec 50: 10th Div departed NAEPYONG (內坪) on foot and traveled through mountain roads during the night. The men rested during the day and marched 12-14 km each night for approx 3 weeks.
o/a 17 Jan 51: 10th Div arrived in MUNGYONG (聞慶) and continued movement, but PW was left behind due to his frost bitten feet. PW reported to the 10th Div field hospital, which was located vic KWANNUN-NI (DS 2573) after 3 days in the hospital the area was attacked by a ROK unit and PW was forced to flee toward TONGNO-MYON (동로면).
o/a 22 Jan 51: PW arrived in TONGNO-MYON (동로면) and was captured by the pursuing ROK unit.

b. Unit Organization and Strength: (21 Dec 50 - 17 Jan 51)
10th Div composed of 25th, 27th and 29th Inf Regt. One artillery bn was attached to the 29th Regt, but the Bn had no heavy weapons.
Each Regt consisted of 3 rifle bn. The arty bn was considered a rifle bn. One artillery plat was allotted to each bn, but because there were no mortars or field guns, they were assigned to one of the rifle companies’ bn, as in PW case.
Each bn composed of 3 co with 3 plat in each co. There were 27 men in PW plat.
Aside from the arty plat of the bn there was one mortar co to each regt.

c. Weapons and Ammo:
Each mortar co (one to each regt), had equipped with 5 or 6 82mm mortars with approx 10 rounds each.
7.62mm HMG - 27 (3 to each bn) with approx 700 rounds to each MG.
7.62mm LMG - One to each rifle plat.
7.62mm SMG (PPSH) - One to each Sqd Ldr with 142 rounds each.
7.62mm Russian Carbines - 60% of riflemen with 50 rounds to each man.
30 Cal US M1 Rifles - 20% of riflemen with 150 rounds each.
Hand Grenades - 10 to each plat.

d. Communication:
PW observed a field telephone in Hq of 3rd Bn. A hand signal was used by men of the 27th Regt both day and night when encountering unidentified persons. The signal was to stop and extend the right arm shoulder high and wait for the opponents response which was also the same signal.

e. Clothing:
Approx 30% of the recruits wore civilian clothing.
