Dear Dr and Mrs Oliver:
It is Aug 1, 7pm and I will try to type a few lines. We have to leave for Chinhae tomorrow morning because all the candidates are coming running telling Pappa how bad the other fellow is. The poor President is bothered with all the political string pulling against each other and only gets excited. I wish I had time to write more about but I am afraid there is no time left.
UNCURK Dr Idil came yesterday and told the pres that the UNCURK had a meeting and wanted to propose to ROK to supervise the election. Our friends were against it saying that this is an indep. country why should we propose it? There is no need- as far as they see it Pres Rhee will be elected any way- the people have no one else in mind.
The Premier and the present Home minister Kimtaisun are against Lee Pumsuk and support Hamtaiyoung ... But it seems the people have also decided on the vice pres. and I am told Lee Pumsuk will be elected. It will be very unfortunate as the Premier and home Min are so against him and are stirling up the Pres against him.
He like all of us may have faults but somehow the people like his aggressiveness ..... Louisa is against all of them .....
The Pres had read your letter of July 23 and marked several paragraphs but he had no time to dictate the answer. We had talked it over and if Mooki did not get sick he could have found time for it. But he is now translating his aug 15th speech. See encl. Engl copy. We will try to get the K version also in the pouch. In case there are corrections later we will cable them to Koric.
He approved of Vino's returning and asked Kim Yongsik to contact the man in Hono Jack Gillette to come out here. More about it later.
Mr Vino wishes to return to KPP and help the GOP in its statements in regard to K. No doubt he will tell you more about it. So will I. Ecnl. a conf. copy of a letter to Amb Y which letter was not finished.
But from you will see that our governm does not have the 250 mill for a publ. program.
The pres wants you to keep up what you were doing now but enlarging if possible. He ask me to show him the proposal made by you last year- but I have destroyed it several weeks ago. Please can you send something up to date -covering several categories-- in amounts needed ....
The Pre approved of the mag you propose to issue instead of the perisc
The Pres dictated a letter into the machine for Ben and I am sending you a copy- the letter was not finished either- someone came and he did not have time to continue,
Best regards to you both
Please pardon me the poor letter it is written after a long , hectic and terrific hot day.
sincerely
