Security Measures: A 2 m high electric barbed wire fence surrounded this building area and a guard stood at the front entrance armed with a 38 model Japanese rifle.

GUARD UNIT:
YENCHI, MANCHURIA Obs: Aug 45 - Jul 49
During the above period, PW observed the area about once a week while walking on the adjacent roads.
From 1942 to Aug 45, this location (present Inf unit) was occupied by the 81st Regt (Japanese Inf Regt) and in Aug 45 this area (see sketch #2) was occupied by a Guard Unit of the CCF.
Location: Approximately 300 m N of the RR Station and approximately 500 m SW of the concrete bridge. See sketch #2.
Buildings: There were approximately 35 brick buildings (6 m x 40 m) 3 m high. The roofs of the buildings were gables and of sheet iron. Approximately 15 of these buildings were in usable shape and being used.
Strength: Guard Unit consisted of about 200 men. Duty was to guard Corps Hq. Uniforms had no epaulets.

ENGINEER UNIT:
YENCHI, MANCHURIA Obs: May 47 - Jul 48
PW entered this area 3 times visiting friends in Jul 48, and in May 47 studied there a week the principles of dynamite.
Location: Approximately 5 km NNE of the RR Station. See sketch #1 and #3.
Strength of Unit: Approximately 200 EN took basic training under 4 officers (rank unknown) who were no epaulets.
Miscellaneous Information: PW saw that the unshaded buildings on sketch #3 were being repaired and that dynamite in wooden boxes, 30 cm x 40 cm x 60 cm, were stored in these repaired building.

INFANTRY UNIT:
YENCHI, MANCHURIA Obs: May 47 - Jul 48
PW observation of the Inf unit on sketch #3 was from a distance of approximately 300 m. Details were unavailable. Strength of unit was estimated at 300 men.

AIRFIELD
YENCHI, MANCHURIA Obs: Mar 47
While PW was attending Middle School approximately 60 students including PW were sent to this airfield to cut the grass along the runway. It was rumored then that this airfield was to be used by the CCF in the near future. This airfield was used by the Japanese Army and abandoned in Aug 45.
Location: Approximately 3 km NE of the YENCHI RR Station. See sketch #1 and #4.
Miscellaneous Information: When PW worked here there was no activity about the airfield and the only planes seen were 2 wrecked Japanese fighter planes in the hangar. See sketch #4.

ENGINEER UNIT:
HSIASHULINSU, MANCHURIA Obs: Jun 47 - Aug 47
PW had basic training (Engr) in this area. There were no roads leading to this area so PW and approximately 120 EM went by barge (15 barges) from HSIASHULINSU to this unit area; a distance of 3 hours by barge. See sketch #5.
Location: Approximately 12 km N of HSIASEULINSU, MANCHURIA. The topography was mountainous on both sides of the river. Because of it only millet, corn, and potatoes were grown in the area.
Strength of Unit: Approximately 50 EM (recruits) and 4 officers were stationed here. Commanding officer was a Capt (name unk). The other officers were a 1st and two 2nd Lt.
Training: Approximately 50 pontoon barges were camouflaged with grass along the river bank. These pontoons were used during training to span the river. The river was never spanned due to the wideness of the river, but the 50 pontoons served for training purposes.
Em were also taken into the hills and taught how to use dynamite. 4 or 5 sticks of dynamite wrapped together with 1 cap were used to cut down 8 m high trees. Classroom studies consisted of instruction on explosives.
