2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was talkative and seemed cooperative. However PW was not able to estimate distances or directions or give exact dates. He worked as truck driver most of the time during his 10 years stay in MANCHURIA; was not observant, or interested in military or strategic installations. PW was drafted into the NKA. as truck driver on 7 Aug 50 and voluntarily surrendered to the ROK forces at POUN on 26 Sep 50 before he was assigned to any specific unit. Reliability - fair.

CHRONOLOGY:
Apr 35 - Entered MANCHURIA. Worked in a photography shop at MUTANCHIANG (牡丹江) for one year.
Apr 36 - Worked as truck driver at MUTANCHIANG for three years.
Oct 39 - Worked as truck driver at SUIYANGHSIEN (綏陽) located 20 km West of SUIFENHO (綏芬河) for a period of 2 years.
Sep 41 - Returned to MUTANCHIANG and worked as truck driver for one year.
Apr 42 - Worked as clerk at TUNGAN (東安) for one year and as farmer for two years.
Oct 46 - Departed TUNGAN for MUTANCHIANG because all PW personal property was looked by the Russian soldiers who occupied the city. After arrival at MUTANCHIANG PW worked at a tire repair shop for approx 6 months.
15 Mar 47 - Returned to NORTH KOREA. Arrived NAMYANG (南陽).

ARMED FORCES  MUTANCHIANG (牡丹江)

A. HAILANG MILITARY AIRFIELD (海浪軍事飛行場)
LOCATION - The airfield was located approx 6 km southwest of the MUTANCHIANG RR Station SSW of the “HAIIANG RR Station” and 500 m W of the MUTANCHIANG (牡丹江).
DESCRIPTION - The airfield was situated stop a plateau approx 50 m high and was well camouflaged with grass.
RUNWAY AND FACILITY - No runway or facility could be observed from the vicinity as the area was situated higher than the surrounding area. However, aircraft were observed taking off in a SW to NE direction. It was said that all facilities of this airfield were constructed underground.
AIRCRAFT AND ACTIVITIES - This former Japanese Airfield was occupied by the Russian army until Dec 46 and later used by the CCF 8th Route Army. PW observed YAK-3 type single engine fighter and PO-2 type bi-plane trainees engaged in take-off and landing training approx four tines per day. The number of air draft at this training field was small but PW was not able to estimate the approx number. Remarks - PW never observed any twin engine aircraft land or take-off from this field.
No further details were known as observations were made from a distance of 1000 m.

B. MUTANCHIANG CIVILIAN AIRFIELD (杜丹江旅容飛行場)
LOCATION - The airfield was located rest of the town area, 4 km S of the MUTANCHIANG RR Station, 700 m SSE of a steel RR bridge 200 m long and located 4 km west of the MUTANCHIANG RR Station, and 1000 m E of the MUTANCHIANG.
DESCRIPTION - The airfield was approx 2000 x 1000 m in dimension and enclosed by a dirt embankment am barbed wire fence 2 m high; however, the fence was in quite poor condition. A dirt ditch 5 m wide and 3 m deep was located along the south and east side of the field. A dirt road 15 m wide skirted the airfield from west to south.
RUNWAY AND FACILITY - This former Japanese airfield was not utilized after the termination of World War II and most facilities were destroyed. Three parallel SW/NE concrete runways 1000 x 50 m in dimensions, and 30 m apart were located on the north, portion of the field. .The three runways were connected at the NE ends.
Approx eight semi-underground concrete fuel tanks, 8 m in diameter and 3 m high from ground level, were located on the SW portion of the airfield.
Also destroyed remain of bldg were located on the NW portion of the field. No other facilities observed on this field.
REMARKS - The airfield has not been used since abandonment by the Japanese and most of field was utilized as farm land as of Mar 47.

C. MILITARY BARRACKS AND OTHER FACILITIES IN MUTANCHIANG AREA.
All former Japanese Army barracks and facilities in the vicinity of MUTANCHIANG were completely destroyed by the Japanese before leaving the area in 1945.
A South Manchurian RR Co locomotive plant was located 2 km E of the MUTANCHIANG RR Station. The plant covered an approx 150 x 100 m area. PW heard that all essential equipment of this plant was removed to RUSSIA by the Russian soldiers and as of early 1946, no facilities were located in the plant.

ARMED FORCES  TUMEN (図們)

A. “TUMEN” CIVILLIAN AIRFIELD (図們民間飛行場)
LOCATION - The airfield was located 1 km NE of the “TUMEN” RR Station on the W bank of the TOUMAN River (豆澫江)
DESCRIPTION - The airfield covered an approx 1500 x 800 m area and was enclosed by a barbed wire fence 2 m high. A stone and dirt dike 1.5 m high was located along the E and NE side of the field.
RUNWAY AND FACILITY - One N/S concrete runway 800 x 50 m was located on the east portion of the field. No other facilities or bldg were observed on this airfield.
REMARKS - PW stated that this airfield ras constructed but hardly utilized by the Japanese. No aircraft or activity or observed. Also this field vas not used by the Russian Army or the CCF 8th Route Army.
