DESCRIPTION: 2/3 is two story bldg, 1/3 3 story brick building
REMARKS:
Russians removed all the best machinery in 1946. Chinese removed the rest except the heaviest machinery which has been destroyed. Glass windows all broken. Doors removed, most window frames removed.
Roof remains in fairly good condition. Heard that part of building has been repaired and is used for making ammo.
A great explosion in the building occurred in April 1949. Does not know effect of explosion. 2th Route Army is not using building.
ECONOMIC
OBS: 1943-49 T’UNGHUA
Former shoemaker-made leather shoes. Made 6 yen a day before the close of war 12 1949. Made 12,000 yuan per day. Living cost 9,000 yuan per day.
4,500 yuan cost of half soling 1 shoe.
1 day in hotel cost 100,000 yuan.
1 suit clothes cost 1,800,000 yuan.
Jap watch (ordinary) cost 1,500,000 yuan.

1 mal millet 49,000 yuan

Coal used by wealthy only and in large buildings. Price unknown.
WOOD
Wood used by poorer people. 1 oxcart load cost 30,000 to 60,000 yuan. Wood is brush wood. Firewood cost 300,000 yuan for a truck load.
OIL
Bean oil used for food.
ELECTRICITY
All classes use electric lights. Electricity comes from CHILIN. Cost - 20,000 yuan per 60 watt bulb per month. One 60 watt lamp costs 15,000 yuan.
AUTOS
Some in use but number unknown.
MOTOR REPAIR
Two repair shops are in TUNGHUA.
RADIOS
TUNGHUA
The Koreans have a few (15 to 20) radios in TUNGHUA. Chinese have many radios.
TAX
PW paid 30,000 yuan per month.
POLITICAL
YOUTH ASSN
Koreans in separate units from Manchurians. All youths 17 to 35 in a village in this Assn. Leader called WONJANG (■元長). Elected by free public vote in a public meeting by nomination and show of hands. PW insists no pressure was brought to bear on them to vote for a particular man.
No term length when elected. No salary.
All the villages were under a HYAN not elected by people, but appointed by higher authorities.
ARMY
There are some cavalry there. Number unknown. Saw about 5 pieces of large arty. Size unknown. No Air Force. No tanks. Saw some LMG. Number unknown.
All infantry had rifles. Each man had a cartridge belt full of ammo.
Several Inf Regt (CCF). One Inf Regt (Korean).
PROPAGANDA
1949 - Urging people to support the fight against the nationalist army. Heard no propaganda against US or S KOREA.

12. The former airfield was used as army training ground.
