NAVAL SHIPS IN PETROPAVLOVSK HARBOR, PETROPAVLOVSK Obs: Aug 46 - Feb 47
During the above period engaged in roading canned goods on Russian naval vessels. Because PW was restricted to the naval ship, detailed observation of the town of PETROPAVLOVSK was not possible.
While working on a ship observed approx 10 naval vessels (with armament) measuring approx. 80m in length and 25m in width, and about 50 small wooden naval vessels (without visible armament) measuring approx 20m in length and 7m in width.
Each armed vessels had four 76-mm Guns (2 on forward and 2 on rear deck). The above vessels were anchored in the center of PETROPAVLOVSK Harbor which was approx 5km SE of PETROPAVLOVSK RR station. No movements of these ships were observed. PW worked on only one vessel.
The ranking officer observed on the ship was a senior grade officer wearing yellow epaulets. Observed about 20 officers, 100 men, and 15 Korean workers, working on this ship.
Submarines and seaplanes were not observed in the harbor. Although not observed, heard that the only ship repair facility was a small lathe shop (location unknown).
The harbor started to freeze in Oct and the ice was about 1m thick in Feb. Heard the ice thaws in Mar. Informant observed one ice breaking vessel (about 50m long) on 1 Feb 27.
The canned goods loaded on the ship were shipped from unknown places and consisted of fish, to be consumed by the naval personnel.
See sketch for layout of harbor.
