2. ASSESSMENT:
Spoke freely and appeared willing to give any information he had. Observation of military targets being limited. Intelligent and relatively well educated. Reliability good.

Chronology:
4 Aug 31: Born in KOREA, KYONGSANG NAMDO, SANCH’ONG GUN, SILCHON Myon, TONGDANG-Ni.
1937: Went with parents to MANCHURIA, NINGAN HSIN, TISANCH’U, MACTHAT’SUN (寧安縣 第三區 馬家村) east of NINCAN (寧安) (See attached sketch).
9 Jul 49: Entered Army in above place. Thought he was going into Chinese Army when he was drafted into the army with about 40 of his school mates. Came by rail via HARBIN (哈爾賓), MUKDEN (奉天) (2 weeks stop) to SINUJU (新義州), N. KOREA. Trip tock about one month.

Topography       NING-AN(寧安)
Pvt (戰士)        Obs: 1937-Jul 49
NING-AN (寧安) was situated on a broad plain. Low rolling hills located on NW of plain. Approx 50m high hill was situated 8km SE of NING-AN (寧安) RR station. MU-TAN-CHIANG (牡丹江) River flows N to S, 3km SE of NING-AN (寧安) RR station. Depth of river 3m. Current - fairly fast. Flood in 1946 damaged highway concrete bridge. Winter season from Nov to Mar. Summer from May to Aug. Snow starts falling Nov. Average snow fall 1m. Deepest snow - 1.5m. Snowfall did not prevent truck traffic. Rice, beans, wheat and various vegetables were being raised.

RR Steel trestle bridge   Obs: 1937-Jul 49

Location:
Approx 2km SW of NING-AN (寧安) RR station. Crossing MU-TAN-CHING River (牡丹江) observed a RR steel trestle bridge. Observed from a distance of 300m during above mentioned period.
Dimension of bridge: length-300m, width-5m. There were about 13 concrete pillars, about 20m apart. Dimensions of pillar-5m in diameter x 5m high from water level. A narrow guage single track was laid over steel trestle bridge. See sketch #1 and #2.

Highway Concrete bridge  Obs: 1937-Jul 49
Location:
Approx 2km SW of NING-AN (寧安) RR station and about 500m E of RR steel trestle bridge. Crossing MU-TAN-CHING (牡丹江) river. Observed a highway concrete bridge from a distance of 300m during above mentioned period. Note: He never had been across the highway bridge.
Dimension of bridge: 300m long and 6m wide, having about 20, 5m diameter x 5m high from water level, concrete pillars. Refer to sketch #1 and #2 for reference. S part of this bridge was damaged by a flood in Sep 45 but it was repaired within a month. Further details unknown.

Sociological (Economic)  NING-AN (寧安)

Ferry Boat Crossing Point:
Location: Approx 3km SE of NING-AN (寧安) RR station and about 1km NE of concrete highway bridge. There was a ferry at the above location on the MU-TAN-CHING (牡丹江) River. Size and type of ferry: one 25m long x 7m wide x 3m high wooden ship. The boat was operated by 3 men, pushing boat by 7m long wooden poles. Loading capacity of ship is said to be about 300 men at a time. The boat was also being used for crossing oxcarts and freight. Ferry service: 0800 to 1800 hours daily. Fare: 150 yuan (圓) per person. Military personnel and students free. Fare collected by crew aboard ferry.
The distance across the river at ferry boat crossing is said to be about 300m and the depth of river is about 2m. The current is fairly fast. PW stated that it took about 20 minutes to go across the river. From Nov to Mar, the ice on the river is about 50cm thick and oxcarts and people were able to cross.
