2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative, spoke freely, and was at ease while speaking. PW seemed intelligent. Reliability good.

PW Worked for himself as a shoe maker during the above period.

HAILAN River (海蘭江)
Location:
1.5 km west of RR station. 100 to 200 m in width, Diked about 6 m on the east bank to gradual slope on the west bank. River bank sand and gravel. Flow is quite fast. Clear water. Depth 1 m.

LIUTAO River (六道河)
Location:
2 km south of RR station. 100 to 300 m in width. Flowed into HAILAN River at point 2.2 km SS-west of RR station. Diked about 6 m to the north. Gradual slope to the south bank. Bank was sand and gravel. Flow fast. Clear water. Depth 2 ft.

Transportation and Communication:
Bridges    LUNGCHING
Pvt (戰士)   Obs: 1928-15 Dec 49
Location: 1.5 km west of RR station
Size: 100 m in length. 20 m in height from water level.
Description: Deck pratt type, steel bridge. About 10 concrete piers.
Remarks: Single track, standard gauge RR ran-across bridge. Depth at bridge point 1 m.

Location: 2 km WSW of RR station and 800 m south of above steel bridge.
Size: About 120 m in length and 8 m in width.
Description: Deck pratt type wooden bridge. About 12 concrete piers and 20 m in height from water level.
Remarks: Bridge only used by vehicles and pedestrians. Depth at bridge point about 1.2 m (See sketch).

Location: About 2.2 km SW of RR station.
Size: About 120 m in length.
Description: Deck pratt type steel bridge. About 12 concrete piers and 15 m in height. Height from water level.
Remarks: A single track, standard gauge, RR spur extended south from the point about 500 m west of the RR station, to a city called HOLUNG (和龍), located about 72 km to the south of LUNGCHING. Depth at bridge point about 70 cm (See Sketch).

Economic    LUNGCHING

T/E Power Plant:
Location: 2 km NW of the RR station and 500 m east of HAILAN River (海蘭江) measuring about 200 m in width.
Description: Four-story concrete bldg 25 x 40 x 40 m. Two steel smoke stacks extended about 10 m from roof.
Terrain: Level farmland with scattered civilian homes around the plant.
Transportation: Single track, standard gauge, RR spur extended into plant area from the east.
Guards: 8th Route army guards posted at main gate. Sentries did not wear epaulets.
Remarks: Civilians operated plant. Plant supplied all electrical power to LUNGCHING and HOLUNG (和龍) (See sketch).

Armed Forces  LUNGCHING
Pvt (戰士)    Obs: Jul 47-15 Dec 49
Infantry unit (8th Route Army)
Location: About 1.5 km SSE of RR station outskirts of city.
Billet: Two three-story brick bldgs 15 x 40 x 20 m. Former boys and girls school.
Strength: About 1,000 men. Epaulets and commanding officer unknown.
Arms: Men equipped with old Japanese bolt action rifles. Russian SMG and heavy machine guns. Vehicles not observed.
Disposition: Men worked on the wheat farms. Harvested wheat was rationed to different units in other areas. Some were detailed as guards.
Training: Troops seemed to be veterans and were observed having close order drill and other training in the unit area. They also went out on a firing range located about 3.5 km SSE of the RR station about once a month.
Location: About 2 km south of the RR station, close to a shrine and 400 m north of the LIUTAOHO River (六道河).
Billet: Three brick bldgs 10 x 50 x 5 m. Former tax officer bldgs.
Strength: About 300 men. Epaulets and commanding officer unknown. Details from unit stationed 1.5 km SE of RR station.
Arms: Men armed with old Japanese bolt action rifles and Russian SMG.
Disposition: Men worked in wheat fields and repaired tools used on the farms.
Trainings Close order drill in unit area observed (See sketch).

Economic    LUNGCHING
Pvt (戰士)    Obs: 1945-15 Dec 49
Medical School
Location: 1.5 km south of RR station.
Bldgs: More than 50 brick bldgs of various sizes. Former Japanese consul office.
Students: About 200 students, both civilians and men from the 8th Route Army attended the school. Instructors were Japanese doctors. School was supervised by an 8th Route Army officer. Rank unknown. (See sketch)
