2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was not observant or talkative. He made several contradictory statements and seemed, at times, confused. PW was not able to draw sketches of towns in which he was stationed while with the CCF, and also did not observe any strategic targets. Also locations of military installations were not known. Reliability - poor.

CHRONOLOGY:
11 Sep 40 - PW entered MANCHURIA at the age of 9. Attended school at CHILIN-SHENG, KUOCHIEN (吉林國前) until Aug 45.
15 Aug 45 - Joined the CCF 8th Route Army 7th sub until (approximately 10,000 men) at KUOCHIEN. PW was assigned to the 7th sub unit, 1st Regt, 3d Bn, 4th Co, 4th Plat, 2d Sqd. Received 2 months rifle training.
3 Jun 47 - The 7th sub unit was assigned to the 60th Army and coverted into the 165th Div. PW assigned to the 165th Div, 405th Regt as messenger.
The 165th Div was transferred to and fought with the Chinese Nationalist Forces in the CHILIN Area until Mar 48.
10 Oct 48 - The 165th Div was transferred to HSINKING. Engaged in training until 15 Jan 49.
17 Jan 49 - The 165th Div returned to CHILIN and was stationed there until 22 Jul 49.
23 Jul 49 - Departed CHILIN for XOPEA by train, with the 165th Div, 405th Regt (approx 5,000 men).
27 Jul 49 - Arrived NANAM (  ) KOREA. The 405th Regt of the CCF 165th Div was converted into the NKA 5th Div.

A. CCF 165th Div
a. Unit Organization and Strength:
The 165th Div was assigned to the CCF 60th Army and consisted of approximately 20,000 men. The Div consisted of the 405th, 406th, 407th and the 408th Regt. Each Regt had strength of approximately 5,000 men. The 408th Regt was an Arty Regt.
The 405th Regt consisted mostly of Koreans and had four rifle Bn, 900 men each, and Arty Bn. Signal Bn. Medical Bn. Transportation Bn, and a cultural section.
b. Equipment:
PW was not familiar with the Div equipment but the 405th Regt equipment was as follows:
5x45mm guns - US made
8 mortars - Jap made, approximately 80mm
21x22mm Bn Mortars - Jap made
500 Jap 99 rifles or 38 carbines
57 Jp made trucks of which 25 where assigned to the Regt Transportation Bn
12 Jap made HMG
64 Jap made LMG
c. Unit History:
The 165th Div was converted from the 7th and until in 3 Jul 47. The 405th Regt of the Div was transferred to North KOREA in Jul 49 and was activated in NANAM as the NKA 5th Div.
d. Disposition: Present location of unit unknown.
e. Supply:
All equipment and ammo were supplied to the unit from YENAN. Fuel for the trucks was supplied from the synthetic oil plant located in CHILIN.
All personnel of the 60th Army (200,000 men) including the 165th Div were issued 2 sets of uniforms while they were occupying HSINKING in Oct 48. The uniforms were captured at the Chinese Nationalist Army textile mill located approximately 4 km E of the HSINKING RR Station.
f. Communication:
Contact between Army, Div, Regt and Bn were made with wireless sets which were made in the USA. PW stated that orders from YENAN were also received through wireless by code.
g. Intentions - Unknown
h. Knowledge of Other Units:
PW stated that the 60th and 70th Armies of the CCF 8th route Army consisted of five Div each of approximately 200,000 men. The only other unit known to PW was the 1145th Div which was assigned to the 70th Army. PW heard that there were approximately 200 Japanese in this unit.
i. Personalities:
CG 60th Army
LEE, Chong Dae (李宗大) Lt Gen (中將) Age - 47
Remarks: Born in RUSSIA and grad of the USSR Military Academy. Was a Regt CG and held rank of Col in the USSR Army. Came to MANCHURIA after World War II and assumed position as CG 60th Army in Mar 48.
CG, 165th Div
LEE, Sun Sok (李川石) Maj Gen (小將) Age - 41
Remarks: Born in MANCHURIA. Went to RUSSIA at the age of 18. Believed to be graduate of USSR Military Academy. Fought with the USSR Army during World War II and had rank of Sr Lt. Returned to MANCHURIA in Apr 47.
CO 405th Regt
KIM, Song Ui (金成義) Col (大佐) Age - 41
Remarks: Born in MANCHURIA. Grad of CHILING Middle School. Joined CCF in Aug 45. Did not follow his unit to KOREA. There were also approximately 45 Japanese in the 405th Regt, including a Lt Col of the cultural section and a Major of the Medical Bn, who did not enter KOREA with the Regt. No further Information.
j. Morale:
Morale of the 405th Regt personnel was low, as 80% of the personnel were forced to join the CCF. Also lack of provision and equipment cause low morale.

GENERAL:
1. The code number of the 405th Regt was 491 and the Regt number changed from time to time from 405 to 615 or 165.
2. The airfield located 8 km North of HSINKING RR Station was used by the CCF as of Oct 48 but details were unknown.
