1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Talkative but information very limited.
Dates and places travelled were confused, especially so, since the PW is illiterate.
However, information derived appears fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Inducted into CNA Aug 47 at SSUCHUAN SHENG (四川省) and received 2 months’ training.
In Dec 48, captured at SSUCHUAN SHENG (四川省) by CCF.
Placed into the HMG, Co, 1st Bn, 442nd Regt, 148th Div, 50th Army (CCF) at HUPEI SHENG (湖北省) Feb 49.
50th Army left HUPEI SHENG in Sep 50 by train and arrived CHILIN SHENG, PAN SHIN HSIEN (吉林省 盤石縣) Sep 50.
148th Div left CHILIN SHENG, PAN SHIH HSIEN Sep 50 by train and arrived in the vicinity of the YALU River Sep 50. Crossed the YALU River into KOREA on the same day.
Arrived in SUWON on foot 25 Jan 51; retreated to SEOUL 27 Jan 51 and remained one night. Marched to the place of capture 15 Feb 51. PW was captured.
PW was placed into the 6th Sqd, 2nd Plat, 2nd Company, because of the lack of infantry troops in Feb 51.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
Heard from the Plat Ldr near the place of capture that the 442nd Regiment and 148th Division CP were on the North side of the HAN River.
50th Army Headquarters was in or around SEOUL.
Mission of the Division, at present, to defend the HAN River.

d. Personalities:

e. Replacements:
No replacements were seen. However, if one company was lacking in personnel, men were evenly distributed from other companies or battalions within the Regiment.

f. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
86 rounds of ammo were issued to the PW at PAN SHIH SHENG Sep 50.
Food was acquired from villages in their route of march.

g. Signal:
Telephones were utilized above battalion level. Runners were employed between companies and battalion.
Bugles were used when attacking and for reveille.

h. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
The morale was very low because of lack of food and clothing. They were also deathly afraid of airplanes and artillery.

i. UN PW
Saw two US PW at SUWON Jan 51 and three at SEOUL Feb 51. They were being taken to the Army Headquarters to be interrogated. Heard that UN PW would be sent to CHINA eventually.

j. Medical:
There were ten cases of malaria in the Co.
PW had not received any immunization since coming to KOREA.
There were no frost bite cases in the Company.

k. Psychological Warfare:
Voluntarily surrendered, 2 hours after he heard a UN broadcast from a jeep.
Saw leaflets and heard broadcasts; he is illiterate, so leaflets meant nothing to him. The broadcast stated, “Chinese friends, surrender! We will give you food and warm clothing, and will eventually send you home to your families. If you do not come, you will be bombed by planes and artillery, and be killed.”
The Chinese spoken was very clear and he understood every word.
PW believed the broadcast.
He did not know if others will surrender, but he knew that four men who were with him surrendered.
