FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1568) 21 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: TSUI, Shou-An (崔寿安) (CCF)

ORGN: 40th Army, 120th Div, 359th Regt, 2nd Bn, 4th Co, 2nd Plat, 6th Sqd
DUTIES: Rifleman

ADDRESS: LIAOTUNG SHENG, FU HSIEN, WAFANG TIEN (遼東省 復縣 瓦房店)
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 141500 I Feb 51 in the vicinity of HOENGSONG (DS 1049).
INTERROGATOR: G.N.Y.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and talked freely. Information seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was conscripted into the CCF 19 Jan 46 at PIKOU (Phonetic). PW and 6 other conscripts were assigned to the Independent 6th Regt; PW was assigned to the 2nd Bn, 6th Co, 3rd Plat, 9th Sqd. Underwent basic training and Political training for a period of 4 months.
May 46, the Independent 6th Regiment redesignated as the 2nd Independent Regt, and the PW was assigned to the 2nd Bn, 4th Co, 2nd Plat, 5th Sqd.
During early May 46, departed with the 2nd Bn to ANSAN (安山), arriving ten days later. 2nd Bn mission was to guard the steel mill, which, at this time, was not in operation.
After 2 months of guard duty, 2nd Bn went to WAFANGTIEN (瓦房店) and rejoined the 2nd Indep Regt.
O/a 20 Aug 46, departed with the 2nd Indep Regt to the LIAONAN (遼南) military district and performed guard duty.
O/a 1 May 48, departed with the 2nd Ind Regt by rail to ANSAN (安山), arriving two days later. The following day (o/a 2 May 48), Regt was integrated into the Independent 169th Div and was redesignated as the 506th Regt. Underwent advanced training with the 169th Div for a period of three months.
O/a 1 Sep 48, departed with 169th Div by rail to ANTUNG (安東), arriving two days later. Underwent infantry and political training and was also engaged in farming.
21 Nov 50, marched across the YALU River into North KOREA, with 1st Bn only, (the remainder of the 169th Div remained at ANTUNG), passed SINUIJU (XE 1839) the following day, and arrived TUKCH’ON-NI (YE2032) o/a 27 Nov 50. 1st Bn was composed of litter-bearers only.
The following day 1st and 2nd Companies departed from PUKCH’ON-NI southward, arriving YONCH’ON o/a 15 Dec 50; the disposition of the 3rd and 4th Companies unknown. 1st and 2nd Companies were attached to the 40th Army, and for the next 20 days, PW was busy carrying casualties back to a field hospital, approximately 40 km N of YONCH’ON; PW carried the litter cases only during the night. He estimated that during those twenty days, his 1st Company alone handled 2,000 to 3,000 casualties.
5 Jan 51, departed with 1st and 2nd Companies, southward arriving vicinity of HOENGSONG (DS 1049) o/a 1 Feb 51.
About a week prior to arriving at HOENGSONG, 1st and 2nd Companies rejoined the 1st Independent Litter Bn. At HOENGSONG, the Bn was integrated into the 120th Div and was redesignated the 2nd Inf Bn; PW was assigned to the 4th Co, 2nd Plat, 6th Sqd as a rifleman.
13 Feb 51, the 120th Div was to start an offensive from this area, but was attacked by UN forces before its plans were set.
The following day during this battle, the PW was wounded in his left hand, and, while nursing his wounds, was captured.

c. Replacements:
1 Feb 51, 1st Indep Litter Bn was integrated into the 359th Regt to replace an infantry battalion, which had disintegrated because of heavy casualties.

d. Food and Ammo Supply:
Food was obtained through confiscation. 120th Div received no new ammo supply while PW was with the units.

e. Signal:
Regiment and higher echelon used telephones. Lower echelons employed runners.

f. Morale:
Morale of the troops was low because of their unit’s high casualties and also because of the lack of weapons.

g. Psychological Warfare:
PW was captured. He had seen leaflets.
The leaflet urged him to surrender immediately for good treatment and food was waiting him.
120th Div soldiers stated that these leaflets were false propaganda.
