FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1571) 21 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: SONG, Kun Ch’ul (宋根出) (송근출) (NKA)

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 090800 I Feb 51 12 Km North of HOENGSONG (DS1049)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative but information was limited due to his brief service with present organization.
Information seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was conscripted into the NKA 38th Div, 2nd Regt, 2nd Bn at ANBYON (CU7223) during early Oct 50.
Departed ANBYON during early Oct 50 and marched through CHANGJIN (CU5171) to CHILPYONG (CA2759), arriving 10 Nov 50.
30 Nov 50, departed CHILPYONG and marched through KOKSAN (BT9795) 10 Dec 50 and arrived YANGGU (DT1117) 20 Dec 50.
22 Dec 50, departed YANGGU and arrived HOENGSONG (DS1049) 15 Jan 51.
5 Feb 51, 38th Div was disbanded and the troops of the unit were assigned to the 12th and other divisions.
PW and 16 others were assigned to the 12th Div, Hq Co located in HUKTONG (18 Km N of HOENGSONG) 5 Feb 51.
8 Feb 51, one squad of the Hq Co, was sent out to reconnoiter the area 6 Km South of HUKTONG.
PW deserted his patrol 8 Feb 51 and surrendered.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
8 Feb 51, 12th Div Hq and 3rd Regt, 12th Div were located in HUKTONG. 1st Regt, 12th Div was located 10 Km W of HUKTONG. 2nd Regt, 12th Div. was within 10 Km Northwest of HUKTONG.
7th Div occupied HUKTONG prior to the occupancy of HUKTONG 5 Feb 51. 7th Div was said to have moved Northward.
12th Div was said to be a front line combat unit.
4 Feb 51, observed approx 1 Bn of CCF marching Southward 10 Km W of HUKTONG.
Heard from his Platoon Leader that the offensive was to have started 15 Feb 51.

d. Replacements:
5 Feb 51, 38th and 43rd Divisions were deactivated and the troops of these units assigned to the 12th and other divisions as replacements.
All able-bodied men who were found by NKA units were immediately forced to join the NKA.
This practice was continued in S KOREA as well as in N KOREA. New inductees were usually sent to a replacement regiment. Heard that a replacement regiment was part of each NKA division.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
1st Sgt of each company made a house to house search looking for food in every village that the unit entered. If food was found it was distributed to the troops.

f. Armor, Artillery and Aircraft:
Heard from his platoon leader 5 Feb 51 that USSR weapons, including tanks and aircraft, will be available when the general offensive started 15 Feb 51.

g. Morale:
Morale of the 12th Div troops was fairly high. It was especially so among the members of 12th Div (about 50%) who had formerly served with the CCF in CHINA and those who had volunteered into the NKA one to two years ago.

h. Medical:
No communicable disease was noted in the 12th Div.
Cases of frozen feet were sent to the rear for treatment.

i. Psychological Warfare:
Voluntarily surrendered because he was forced to join the NKA against his will and was looking for an opportunity to surrender.
Saw leaflets 28 Jan 51.
PW could not understand it because he could not read.
