1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CH’ON, Chun Man (千春滿) (천춘만) (NKA)

DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: 140900 I Feb 51 at a mountain (DS 2542)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Very cooperative. Anxiously tried to offer information, but information was limited. Place, names and dates confused.
The information seems to be reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Inducted into Guard Hq, Arty Company 26 Jun 50 at PYONGYANG.
Received 15 days of close order drill.
Sep 50, deserted his unit and returned home.
In Oct 50, he was apprehended by the NK Home Ministry Guard at home and was placed into the V Corps, 6th Div, 3rd Regt, 1st Bn, 3rd Co, 2nd Plat, 1st Squad at KANGGYE.
Separated from the 6th Division during Jan 51 due to frostbitten feet. Jan 51 he was found by the 7th Division at MULGOL-RI (DS 2582) and was immediately placed into the 1st Sqd, 2nd Plat, 3rd Co, 2nd Bn, 3rd Regt, 7th Division, II Corps.
Deserted 11 Feb 51 and was captured.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
Heard from a fellow soldier 6 Feb 51 that the 7th Division, V Corps, had been transferred to the II Corps when the 34th Division, II Corps was deactivated. 34th Division personnel were placed into the V and II NK Corps.
10 Feb 51, saw five high-ranking CCF at a point 8 Km North of YANGJIMAL (DS 1655). All troops were sent to the mountain that day. Heard rumors that high-ranking CCF and NKA Officers were holding some kind of conference.
Feb 51, heard that the 7th Division Hq was located at PODONG-NI (DS 2055).
The mission as of 11 Feb 51, was to take PYONGCHANG (DS 4635).
Feb 51, saw a Platoon Leader of 6th Division at YANGJIMAL; therefore, he believed that the 6th Division was in that vicinity.

7th Div: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Infantry Regiments, Medical Bn, Recon Co, Signal Bn, Transportation Co, Engineer Bn.
3rd Regt: 3 Infantry Battalions, Signal Co, Medical Co, Transportation Plat, Recon Plat.
2nd Bn: 3 Rifle Co, Med Sqd, Sig Sqd, Transportation Sqd.
3rd Co: 3 Rifle Plat.

d. Replacements:
Saw personnel joining the 6th Division at KANGGYE from the 38th Division Oct 50.
He also saw troops from the 34th Division, joining the 7th Division at KAREGOL (CS 6571) Jan 51.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Received 72 rounds of ammo Jan 51 at KAREGOL.
Food was acquired from farm villages.

f. Signal:
Regiment and Division used telephones and wireless.
Companies and Battalions employed runners.

g. UN PW:
PW squad once took 16 ROK PW and 1 US PW to the 7th Division Headquarters area in Feb 51 from YANJIMAL. Heard that these men were to be interrogated about UN units, tanks, trucks, etc. Heard that there were interpreters at Division Headquarters.

h. Medical:
There had been no cases of typhus in his company but heard that there had been 300 cases of typhus in the 7th Division.
Troops had not received any immunization.
There were 6 cases of frostbitten feet in PW Company. In the 7th Division, heard that approx.150 had severe frostbitten feet.
No medicines applied.

i. Psychological Warfare:
Voluntarily surrendered because he saw the NKA units leave behind their wounded, sick, and frostbitten personnel. He was disgusted.
Saw UN leaflets on three occasions. The leaflets stated, “The NKA is in the front line; the CCF, the 2nd line, and the Russians, last, pushing each other forward. The CCF came into KOREA without food and they are taking your food!”
PW believed the leaflets.
