4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
7 Jan 51 the 7th Div with an estimated 1300 men arrived vic west of PONGHWA-SAN (DS2347) with the mission of going deep into UN lines, to find strength and position, cut MSR, and join the CCF troops. But, for reasons unk the 7th Div was ordered to rest, while only the 1st Regt was to go into WONJU to reconnoiter UN strength and disposition.
The 1st Regt after deploying the 1st Bn (350 men) at CHODAN-DONG (DS1946), the 2nd Bn (350 men) at KUUN-DONG (DS2046), the 3rd Bn (350 men) at a hill 10 km SW of KUUN-DONG, sent out patrols from the Bn into and around WONJU. All reports were made by telephone from Bn Hq to Regt Hq.
Regimental Hq were close together, the 1st Regt Hq at TAEOJI (DS2346), the 3rd Regt at SOSABIRI (DS2546) and the 2nd Regt at SAMSILCHON (DS2247) as a reserve unit.
7 Jan 51 the division hq (250 men) was situated in CHONGMUNGO-RI (DS3351) 10 km N of KUUNDONG, with its attached Recon Plat, Sig Plat, Engr Plat, Defense Sqd and PPSH SMG Co (50).
The V Corps Hq arrived at a point 40 km N of the Div Hq.
This information was as of 4 Feb 51. PW believes that since they were attacked they will move according to their pre-prepared plans.
7th Div will conduct a delaying action after contact. Bn will pull back to Regt. Regt will pull back to the Division. 6th Div on the right flank and the 12th Div on the left will continue to conduct a delaying action until they make contact with the 27th Div which is reserve for the Corps.
This delaying action will be conducted on all fronts by the V Corps until they are pushed back where 2 CCF Armies hold a strong defensive line behind HONGCHON and V Corps Hq. After drawing the UN forces into the CCF the V Corps will swing around the east coast into the TAEBEK Mt, working its way behind the UN rear.
2 CCF Armies will test the strength of the UN force. If they are not able to hold the defensive line, they will call for tanks kept behind the 38th Parallel. If then they are pushed back the 2 CCF armies will separate, one going down the west coast the other going down the east coast. The advancing enemy will then be met by 600,000 CCF troops deployed along the 38th Parallel.
V Corps, the two CCF Armies, and possibly the II Corps will contact units in the rear which at present are making contact with pro-communists, and studying the roads and terrain, besides making raids and ambushes against small UN groups.
When the 4th phase begins the near units will wait for the CCF, and together makes a big push to PUSAN.
In this 4th phase the CCF will employ 3,000 planes, 900,000 troops and it will be an all out frontal attack.
According to MAO Tse Tung the NKA will be spared from fighting in the front lines, because after their ultimate victory, KOREA will need good strong men to control KOREA and protect its people from further aggression.
