FIELD REPORT (2 Div LDI 0193) 12 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: OM Bo Hwan
AGE: 26
RANK: Pvt
DUTY: Laborer in Engr Unit
UNIT: 4th Field Army, 39th Army, 116th Div, Engr Co
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 120700 Feb 51 at vic 4 km N of CHIPYONG-NI (DS7948)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and gave information willingly but information was limited due to position (laborer) in unit. Does not seem to have knowledge of place names. Information seems reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
6 Feb 51, unit was on a march but since PW was carrying a load on his back, he dropped out from formation to rest. Lost contact and while trying to locate his unit he stumbled into a villager's home and ate a meal there. 120700 12 Feb 51, the farmer bound PW hands and turned him over to UN Forces.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
3 Jan 51, 116th Div was engaged in combat 16 km N of SEOUL. 6 Feb 51, 116th Div departed and headed SE from SEOUL.

b. Strength of Unit:
39th Army had the 115th, 116th and 117th Div. When 116th Div departed vic 16 km N of SEOUL on 6 Feb 51, heard from his company commander that the 115th and 117th Div were to accompany the 116th Div on the move.
116th Div had the 36th, 37th and 38th Inf Regt and attached units, Arty Bn, Sig Bn, Engr Bn, Security Bn, Recon Bn and a Medical Bn. Strength of the 116th Div was estimated to be 10,000.
36th Regt was on the march together with the 116th Div Hq, but PW did not see the 37th and 38th Regt.

c. Weapons:
While on the march, observed the following weapons in Arty Co of the 36th Regt (strength: 120 men): 3 Mt Guns (approx 40 rd per), 9 x 60mm mortars (approx 40 rd per).
Following weapons were observed in an Inf Bn of the 36th Regt (strength: 400 men): 3 HMG (600 rd per), 27 LMG (500 rd per).
The Infantrymen were armed with automatic rifles and Japanese 38 rifles (120 rd).
There were 90 men in the Engr Co and only about one-third of the men were armed with Japanese 38 rifles (80 rd per). Every man carried 1 hand grenade. Equipment in the Co was only picks and shovels.
O/a 28 Jan 51, heard from his Co CO that in about a month’s time, the CCF would have many tanks and Arty pieces to support their ground forces.

d. Clothing:
Everyone in the 116th Div wore cotton quilted winter uniforms.

e. Diseases:
Neither saw nor heard of any contagious diseases.

f. Physical Condition:
No one suffered from frostbite and the men seemed to be in healthy condition.

g. Food:
Unit received no food supply but food found in villages was plentiful.

h. Supply:
Ammo was transported by trucks from NK to SEOUL, from there it was carried by the men. 116th Div received its last ammo 2 Feb 51.

i. Morale:
Morale was very low due to fatigue from the long and continuous marches.
