PW cooperative and information seems fairly reliable although limited due to short time in unit.
Not recommended for further interrogation.
1 Feb 51 PW left his unit (2 km S of CHOKTONG (DS0640) and went to 7th Div Hospital at CHOKTONG because he was ill.
8 Feb 51, 7th Div Hospital was surrounded and PW with 8 others were captured.
a. Chronology:
26 Jan 51 the 38th Div was deactivated at CHOLKOL (10 km S of HONGCHON) and PW and two officers were assigned to 7th Div.
27 Jan 51, assigned to 3rd Regt, 1st Bn, 45mm Arty Plat and the two officers were assigned to Comm Bn.
1st Bn and 45mm Arty Plat were located 2 km S of CHOKTONG (DS0640). Strength of 45mm Arty Plat was one officer and 12 EM, and this Plat had 5 Russian rifles and 5 rifles, with 40 rd ea.
Strength of 1st Bn was approx 300 men (originally 549 men): 4 x 82mm mortars (10 rd per), HMG (Russian) (1000 rd per), HMG (USA) (no ammo), 6 LMG (123 rd per), 10 PPSH SMG. 80% of the men in 1st Bn were armed with Russian rifles (120 rd per). 1st Bn and 45mm Arty Plat were 2 km S of CHOKTONG until 1st Feb 51.
27 Jan 51 heard from 1st Bn CO that 7th Div Hq was located 4 km SE of CHOKTONG. Also heard from same source that the 7th Div consisted of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regt, Recon Co, Engr Bn, Comm Bn，Med Bn and Security Plat. These Units were located between 7th Div Hq and 1st Bn Hq.
When PW left 38th Div at CHOLKOL on 26 Jan 51, heard from personnel officer that V Corps had 6th, 7th and 12th Div at present. Originally V Corps had 6 Div, 43rd, 27th and 38th Div were deactivated o/a 15 Jan 51.
b. Supply:
Two-thirds of the men in 1st Bn had winter clothing. All troops ate only twice a day due to insufficient food.
c. Morale:
Morale of the troops was very low, because they received air attacks during the day and sometimes even at nights.
