PW deserted the Guard Bn and SAEMAL (DS 1853) on 6 Feb 51 and hid in the vicinity of DS 1854 until 9 Feb 51 when he made his way south and surrendered at YONGDUN (DS 1751).

a. Chronology:
20 Jan 51 - Conscripted into the NKA from his home near PYONGYANG NK with 10 others. Sent from PYONGYANG to CHORWON on truck, and continued afoot to SAEMAL where they joined the 7th Div. PW received a M-1 rifle and 19 rd of ammo at PYONGYANG, but he was not issued a uniform until after his arrival at SAEMAL.
26 Jan 51 - Upon his arrival at 7th Div hq PW was assigned to the Guard Bn. In addition to performing sentry duty, PW was given instruction in the care and use of his weapon. This instruction did not include actual firing of the weapon and PW was held strictly accountable for his 19 rd of ammunition. Div Hq and the Guard Bn only, were in the immediate vicinity.
1 Feb 51 - The 7th Div received 500 CCF winter uniforms. They were delivered by troops using “A” frames. 25 members of the Guard Bn were issued either complete uniforms or parts of a uniform, dependent upon their needs. The remainder were sent to the Regt of the Div.
6 Feb 51 - PW deserted with the intention of surrendering to UN Forces.
8 Feb 51 - From his hiding place PW saw his former unit, the Guard Bn moving northward. Div CP was in company with the Guard Bn.
9 Feb 51 - PW left his hiding place, and surrendered.
b. Organization and Strength:
7th Div: PW heard that Div strength was approx 3,000 at the time he was assigned.

c. Code Name:
Guard Bn: “SONAMU” (Pine tree)
d. Personality:
Obs the 7th Div CG at SAEMAL, dressed in American Army OD and field jacket, and wore insignia of grade (2 stars).
e. Intention:
The mission of the Div was to occupy the SAEMAL area, and repel any UN advance.
f. Weapons:
Guard Bn: Rifles only
g. Supply:
(1) Food: Locally procured.
(2) Ammo: Allowance for Guard Bn was 40 rd (hearsay).
Source actually was issued 19 rd at PYONGYANG.
h. Other Units:
The 6th NK Div was in the vicinity, but moved north. (o/a 3 Feb 51 hearsay)
i. Medical
Disease: About 300 troops of the 7th Div were reported to be affected with typhus. (hearsay) 4 members of the Guard Bn were affected. (obs)
