PW was cooperative, but he didn’t seem to be too intelligent. Tactical information on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regt of the 12th Div was limited due to the fact that PW was with the Div CP most of the time. Information received seems fairly reliable.
PW did not want to fight so he deserted 9 Feb 51 and surrendered to a ROK Unit.
a. Chronology:
9 Feb 51, 12th Div Hq CP was located at HUKTONG (approx 20 km N of HOENGSONG). PW heard from his Plat Ldr that the 12th Div mission was to attack and capture HOENGSONG and WONJU and in doing so they would be supported by the NKA 7th Div and by the CCF. PW also heard that the NKA and CCF troops attacking HOENGSONG was not a counter offensive but to set up defensive positions.
12th Div composed of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regt. On 9 Feb 51, 3rd Regt was in same locality as the 12th Div CP, while the 2nd Regt was approx 3 km W of the Div CP. 1st Regt was between the 12th Div CP and the 2nd Regt. Strength of Div and Regt unk. PW estimated a Regt strength at 1,400 men.
PW heard from his Co CO that the NKA 38th Div was deactivated o/a 6 Feb 51 and all its personnel were assigned to the 12th Div.
PW observed the following weapons in the 3rd Regt (approx 700 men): 4X82 mortars, 15 LMG and men in the 3rd Regt were armed with Russian rifles (150 rd ea), M-1 rifles (150 rd ea) and PPSH SMG (3-400 rd).
Reconnaissance Co (attached to 12th Div Hq) had about 72 men and they were armed with PPSH SMG (400 rd ea) and Russian rifles (100 rd). Whenever a Recon patrol came in contact with UN or ROK Units, the patrol was ordered to shoot at the enemy and that they would immediately receive reinforcements. A patrol consists of 10-12 man.
b. Clothing:
Everyone in 12th Div wore winter clothing.
c. Medical:
Neither saw nor heard of any contagious diseases.
d. Food:
Men ate 2 meals a day and found it to be sufficient at times and at other times, not enough.
e. Morale:
Morale was high for 50% of the men (Koreans from MANCHURIA) while the morale of the other 50% was very low.
