2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. He was cooperative and of average intelligence. PW was a student prior to entering the military service. PW captured 14 Feb 51. Information obtained is considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
I NK Corps was composed of the 8th, 17th and 47th Div. 8th Div was composed of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Regt. 1st Regt was composed of 3 Inf Bn.

Casualties caused by arty and s/a fire. No air strikes received by PW Co.
The Comm Co had rifles (200 rd of ammo per weapon), 2 hand grenades per man 2 switchboards (11 plugs), 3 radio transmitters, 2 walkie talkies, and 8 telephones.
1st Regt had 2 AT rifles, unk number of SMG, and hand grenades.

b. Unit Assignment and Intention:
O/a 10 Feb 51, PW heard over the telephone, the 8th Div CG ordering the 1st Regt CO to have his Regt cut off the enemy’s escape route on the MSR between SEOUL and SUWON by road blocks and laying mines because the 17th and 47th Div will attack from SEOUL. If successful, the 8th Div will occupy SEOUL.

c. Disposition:
PW heard from a runner that the I NK Corps CP was located in Syngman RHEE’s residence in SEOUL. 12 Feb 51, PW heard that 8th Div CP was located 9 km north of YONGCHON (SEOUL City) in the hills.

d. Communication:
Regt and higher echelons used radios, telephones, and messengers. Lower echelons used telephones and messengers. PW Regt had 3 trucks, 1 jeep, and unk number of ox carts.

f. Morale:
Morale was low because the unit became disorganized during its last engagement 13 Feb 51; also because of fear of possible air strikes and lack of equipment. Whenever the unit received talks on communism the morale seemed to rise.

g. Chronology:
PW enlisted in the NKA 3 Aug 50, at SEOUL and went to CHORWON (CT4335) where he received approx one month’s training. When the UN forces approached CHORWON in mid Oct 50, the personnel fled to CHOSAN (YF3624). PW assigned to present unit at CHOSAN in late Nov 50. 8th Div reorganized at this time. 8th Div departed CHOSAN early Dec 50 and arrived P’YONGYANG, 8th Div via SARIWON (YC4065), KAESONG (BT8604) arrived SEOUL o/a 5 Jan 51. Div crossed the HAN River 5 Jan 51 in vic TOJONG NI (CS185555). Five or six days later 8th Div withdrew to 6 km N of SEOUL. During withdrawal Div crossed HAN River W of the steel RR bridge. After 8th Div withdrew N of SEOUL, 1st Regt was sent to AHYONG DONG 11 Feb 51. 12 Feb 51, 1st Regt crossed HAN River vic TUKTO (CS280555) over the ice and arrived S of KWANAKSAN (CS2046) 13 Feb 51. The same afternoon they were engaged by the UN forces and started to retreat. PW lagged behind because of his burden, 1 sack of rice and 1 field phone. PW fainted and upon regaining consciousness was captured.

h. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Resupply of ammo (100 rd) received in SEOUL. Ammo supply sufficient, food insufficient.

i. Replacements:
No replacements received by PW unit. Wounded personnel given medical treatment and upon recovering, reassigned. Stragglers integrated into other units.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW read UN leaflets and intended to surrender.

k. Foreign Troops:
PW heard from friends, while passing P’YONGYANG, Dec 50, that there were Russian officers in P’YONGYANG.

l. Medical:
PW did not receive immunizations. Typhus was the most common disease in unit. DDT powder was used as a preventive. PW was sprayed twice with DDT at CHOSAN and SEOUL.

m. Effectiveness of Night Bombing:
PW Co was never subjected to night bombing.

n. Dummy Mines:
O/a 5 Feb 51, PW heard from a friend that dummy mines were being laid on the MSR between SEOUL and SUWON to confuse the enemy.s
