3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
30 Jul 46: Volunteered for the Army and assigned to RR Guard Unit, 10th Co at P’YONGYANG.
8 Feb 48: Assigned to 3rd Div, 7th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, which had a strength of about 10,000 men.
9 Feb 48: Received basic training for nearly one year.
26 May 49: 3rd Div ordered to defend the 38th Parallel at HWACH’ON.
15 Mar 50: 10th Div was organized with a strength of 10,000 men. PW was appointed as squad leader (Jr Sgt) of 1st plat, Reconn Co, 10th Div at SUKCHON, and trained recruits.
16 Jul 50: (Sic) 10th Div ordered to combat at HYONPUNG (玄風) in the vicinity of the NAKTONG River.
26 Sep 50: 10th Div ordered to retreat.
15 Nov 50: Arrived HWACH’ON (華川) with about 8000 men. Regrouped and built up to 10,000 men with men from routed units. Re-equipped with Russian weapons.
10 Dec 50: Departed HWACH’ON and fought ROK forces at CHUNCH’ON (春川) and KAPYONG (加平) where the 10th retreated.
15 Jan 51: Crossed mountains and arrived ORI-DONG (梧里洞) where the 10th Div ambushed UN supply convoys etc.
4 Feb 51: 10th Div was surrounded.
9 Feb 51: PW captured.

e. Disposition:
When last seen (8 Feb 51) 10th Div Hq was in UISONG-GUN, ORI-DONG (義城郡 梧里洞), 60 km S of ANDUNG (安東) with 27th Regt directly in front of the Div Hq - about 6 km S. The 29th Rifle Regt on the left flank, about 6 km E of Div Hq and the 25th Regt on the right flank - 6 km W of Div Hq. Arty Regt on the extreme right flank adjacent to the 25th Regt. The medical Unit, and Signal Bn - about 4 km to the rear of Div Hq.

f. Intentions:
To infiltrate UN lines and to destroy UN Supply Convoys.

g. Morale:
Morale was low: Because of unbearable living conditions in the mountains: No food, no sleep and high losses during air attacks.

h. Replacements and Reinforcements:
4 Feb 51: After being surrounded 10th Div anticipated reinforcements, but as of 9 Feb 51 there were none.

i. Supply:
Each man carried 2 days rations, and 20 rounds of ammo for small arms. Front line troops wore straw shoes.
