2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative, uninformed, memory fair, Reliability - Fair

3. AA:
a. 37mm AA gun:
(1) 37mm AA gun used in PW battery.
(2) 37mm AA gun built in USSR.
(3) Tank HE shells fitted these guns.
(4) Ammo markings: Shell heads painted white are armor piercing and those painted black are flak type.
(5) 4 x 37mm AA guns per Bn.
(6) There are 7 men per gun crew.
(7) Duties of gun crew are as follows:
(a) Calibrator (HANG HO = Airline). Duty unk. Operates dial calibrated from zero to unk.
(b) Distance calibrator (KURI = distance). Operates dial set from 100 to 6,000 at 100 intervals. Scale system unk.
(c) Calibrator (SHISOK = Velocity). Duty unk. Operates dial set from zero to unk. Source of data for above three calibrators unk.
(d) Vertical sighter: - Sights by glasses - Optical power unk.
(e) Horizontal sighter: Sights by glasses - Optical power unk
(f) Two (2) ammo bearers. Ammo in clip of five rounds.
Note: No gun crew chief appointed among the 7 men.
(8) Guns hauled by vehicles.
(9) Rate of fire of 37mm: 160 - 180 rounds/minute.
(10) No information on type of fuse. Shells fired by pin. PW heard that all rounds explode at range of 7,000m except when intercepting target within the 7,000 range.
(11) Maximum range of 37mm - 7,000m.
(12) Guns may be used for ground targets.
(13) Flak seen around a/c but no a/c observed shot down. PW saw 5 loads of damaged a/c shot down in other places brought into P’YONGYANG in Aug and Sep 50. Site of wreckages unk. Types of a/c were twin engine and jet-type (painted black). Total number of a/c undeterminable from wreckage.
(14) A certain spring in the PAETANGI (棑彈器) also called SONGTANGI (送彈器) of the 37mm AA gun became weak or broke under sustained fire.
Ed Note: PAE (SONG) TAN GI believed to be “Ejector”.
(15) a. Gun Positions:
Gun positions formed a square with guns at 50m intervals with battery commander in center giving verbal command to gun crew chiefs who in turn gives verbal command to crew. PW uninformed as to where battery CO receives his fire direction orders. No instruments nor machinery in near vicinity of company CO.
b. CHIKIGU (指器具), CHIHWIKIGU (指揮機球) (see sketch below), machine used in conjunction with 85mm AA gun.
PW impression of CHIKIGU apparatus. Saw 4 men on one side of this apparatus. Total number of men required to operate, unknown.
Actual purpose of CHIKIGU unknown.
Appearance: Two wheel trailer square in shape with platform around base. Constructed of steel or sheet iron.
Dimensions: 4 x 4 x 6.5 ft. Height of box approx 4.5 ft. Width of platform, 1.5 ft.
Miscellaneous: Seen in flat place in early Sep 50 in vicinity North of P’YONGYANG RR Station. PW observed a dial approx 4 inches in diameter with needle. Dial was not luminous. No noise emitted from unit. Mfg - unknown. Unit painted OD color, has trailer hook, and two screw type stands between hook and wheels when in operation. No antenna observed.
