PW was cooperative but could not remember place names in KOREA. Information seems fairly reliable.
a. Chronology:
PW was conscripted into the CNA 32nd Army, 2nd Div, 354th Regt at TSINGTAO (靑島市) during Feb 48.
During May 48, the CNA 32nd army arrived at HAINAN Island (海南島).
During Apr 49, the CNA 354th Regt surrendered en masse to the CCF 42nd Army at HAINAN Island, as other units of the CNA 32nd Army fled to FORMOSA.
PW was sent to KWANGCHOU (廣州市) during May 49 and received schooling on communism until Aug 49.
During Aug 49, PW arrived at HEILUNG CHIANG SHENG (黑龍江省) where he received 3 months basic infantry training.
During Nov 49, PW was assigned to the 38th Army, 112th Div, 334th Regt located in HEILUNG CHIANG SHENG.
During Sept 50, the 38th Army departed HEILUNG CHIANG SHENG on train and detrained 2 days later at SINUIJU (XE1839).
After detraining at SINUIJU, the 38th Army marched 60 Km to a place where the entire 38th Army engaged UN Units from 2 Oct 50 to 15 Oct 50.
After the engagement the 38th Army moved south, engaging UN units frequently.
18 Dec 50, the 38th Army arrived at the 38th parallel.
The 38th Army attacked southward from the 38th parallel.
PW deserted 3 Feb 51 at unknown location and surrendered to the US 8th Cav Regt 10 Feb 51.
b. Location and Activities of Units:
3 Feb 51, the 334th Regt was in a defensive position at an unknown place.

112th Div: 334th, 335th, & 336th Rifle Regt.
334th Regt: 3 Rifle Bn, Security Co, Mortar Co and Model 92 Gun Co.

Personnel losses were caused by UN Air strikes, artillery fire, and Armor attacks.
The 38th Army was said to have suffered extremely heavy losses.
PW heard that many rifle co of the 38th Army had been annihilated.
d. Personalities:
TSUO, Kui Hwa, Plat Ldr, 2nd Plat, 5th Co, 2nd Bn, 334th Regt.
e. Replacements:
25 Jan 51, the commander of the 5th Co, 2nd Bn, 334th Regt left the unit to go to CHINA and bring back replacements for his unit.
f. Supplies:
Food was obtained locally because it was impossible to transport food from CHINA due to UN air strikes.
Riflemen of the 38th Army were issued 65 rounds of rile ammo while the unit was on the 38th parallel, 24 Dec 50.
Every man of the 38th Army received 1 x pair of winter shoes (rubber sole, cotton-padded) o/a 20 Jan 51.
g. Signal:
Telephones were used at regiment and higher echelons; lower units used messengers.
h. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Morale of the 334th Regt troops was very low because of the extremely heavy casualties suffered by the unit. Doubt of treatment at the hands of UN troops if they surrendered was the only reason the troops remained their units.
i. Medical:
Approx 30% of the 334th Regt troops were suffering from Malaria. No treatment was given for those suffering from malaria. Malaria cases were not evacuated.
Approx 30% of the 334th Regt troops were suffering from frostbitten feet. No treatment was available for frostbitten feet.
j. Psychological Warfare:
PW voluntarily surrendered because he read a leaflet stating that PW were given fair treatment.
PW decided to surrender because it was the only way to live through this war.
