Although PW was very cooperative and willing to answer all questions, his knowledge of his unit was very limited.
Not recommended for further interrogation.
12th Div (estimated strength 2700) left KANGGYE o/a 5 Dec 50 and arrived in TONGHWA-DONG (CS9831) 10 Jan 51. Enroute PW heard from his Plat Ldr that 2nd and V Corps were surrounding WONJU.
11 Jan 51 at 0500 hrs as the 12th Div was preparing to move 16 KMs N of TONGHWA-DONG, PW deserted. Reason for move unk.
Weapons of 2nd Regt: 3x60mm mortars, 3 LMG per Plat and men armed with rifles, carbines, US M-1 rifles and MGs 100-200 rds per rifle. 50% had 1 or 2 hand grenades.
All in winter uniform.
Food received from villages insufficient.
10% of troops suffering from frostbite.
Morale very low. Many deserters.
