3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
These PsW were captured in vic of YONGWON (BV8901) and MAENGSAN (BU8592) between 26 Nov 50 and 8 Dec 50 by NKA 6th Div. They were taken to the 659 Unit Headquarters which was located at that time in the vic of MAENGSAN where approx 150 ROK PsW were assembled. O/a 10 Dec 50 when the 659 Unit (1,200 men) started its move southward, these ROK PsW were told to follow. They heard that the 661 Unit was to follow the 659 Unit. All troop movements were made at night and during daylight hours troops slept in small villages or in mountain gullies, concealing themselves under branches and straws to avoid air observation.
O/a 29 Dec 50, approx 25 miles S of YANGDOK (BU9744) 6 of the ROK PsW were given Russian rifles (70 rds per) and assigned to the 3rd Co of 1st Bn. Upon reporting to the assigned company, their weapons were taken away and they were used as litter bearers. PsW stated in the 3rd Co there were approx 20 former ROK PsW (25% armed) and 40 NKA (all armed).
O/a 12 Jan 51 the 1st Bn reached KOKSAN (phonetic), first RR Station located SE of WONJU. At KOKSAN it was heard that the 2nd Bn was engaged with UN Forces; therefore the 1st Bn retreated into the nearby mountain and o/a 14 Jan 51 withdrew to a village 5 miles S of HONGCHON (DS0373) where the 6th Div Hqs was located. It was heard that the whole 6th Div was to rest here until they received further orders, but only the Div Hqs and 1st Bn were observed in the area. From this place, the 7th Div Hqs was observed immediately to the S on 15 Jan 51 and it was heard that the Regts of the 7th Div were located in the hills nearby. PsW last observed the 6th Div Hqs at the same location 16 Jan when they made their escape during an air raid.
