FIELD REPORT (2 Div - LDI - 0059) 9 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CHO Song Won (23)
RANK: Jr Lt
UNIT: V Corps, 12th Div, 2nd Regt, 3rd Bn, Hq Anti-tank Plat Leader (No AT Gun)
PLACE AND DATE OF CAPTURE: AN HOON-RI (4 KMs NW of HONG CHON, small village in Mt) 31 Dec 50.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Information obtained from PW seems reliable. He was in a position to obtain general information but tactical information is limited to platoon leader’s level. PW was very cooperative.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW received orders from Bn CO to go to AN HOON-RI to set up security defense for the Bn Hqs. He took one sqd of 8 men to ANHOON-RI and while in the process of preparing a defensive position, they were surrounded by elements of the 3rd ROK Div and captured.
12th Div after their defeat at ANDONG scattered in small groups and retreated North to KANGGYE. They arrived in KANGGYE 3 Nov 50 and started to reorganized by inducting men from the volunteer army brought from SK. By 10 Nov 50 the 12th Div was brought up to full strength of 10,000 men. (2500 men per Regt) Clothed in winter uniform and rearmed with Russian rifles. On the above date the 12th Div was ordered to move south with the following objectives: Objective #1 YANG DUK, #2 INJE, #3 SAM CHOK.
While in KANGGYE PW observed the 2nd Div, 6th Div, 3rd Div also reorganizing. PW does not know where the 6th and 5th Div of the V Corps are located, but believe that the Corps Hqs is still in KANGGYE.
12th Div passed through the following villages after crossing the 38th P: HYON-NI (DT 4000), HA JIN-RI, SAN DONS-NI (CS9979), SAEMAL (DS0177), AN HOON-RI. While working towards their objective, SAM CHOK, Div’s mission at SAM CHOK was to undertake Guerrilla action against the UN Forces.

b. Weapons:
82mm mortars - 3 mortars to each Bn w/400 rds per mortar, HMGs - 2-3 per Bn - US made - 8 boxes of 250 rds each per gun, LMG - 1 per Sqd w/1000 rds each, Hand Grenades - 2 to each man, PPSH SMGs - Sqd Ldr and Ass’t Sqd Ldr, Pistols - all officers.

c. Food:
Rice confiscated from villages. Every man has 4 days ration of rice as emergency ration. Sufficient food is fed to troops.

d. Clothing:
Every man was issued two winter uniforms at KANGGYE, but extra uniform was reissued to another Div at INJE (Unit u/k o/a 25 Dec 50.)

e. Personalities:

3rd Bn CO: SIH Min, Maj.

9th Co CO: KIM O Tuk, Sr Lt.

f. Physical Condition of Troops:
Fatigued because of continuous marching. Two to three men in each Sqd have trench foot and are unable to walk long distances.

g. Morale:
Very low. Majority of men do not want to continue fighting. They are cold and tired and fear UN Forces because of past experiences.

h. Propaganda:
Men are told that CCF are here to help and victory will be theirs soon.

i. Communication:
Between V Corps Div, Regt and Bn Communication is made by wireless. From Bn level down runners are used.
