PW talked freely and was cooperative but info very limited, due to his short period in service and position held in his unit. Otherwise info given seems fairly reliable.

13 Jan 51 just before 31st Div passed through UNHUNG-NI, PW fell and hurt his back and stayed in this village until picked up by the 9th Inf patrol.
31st Div retreated close to the Manchurian border when disorganized by INCHON SEOUL ■K offensive. This unit (approx 600 men) started to move south o/a 15 Dec 50 and on their way they gathered stragglers and civilians. When last observed each Regt had a strength of 6-700 men. 31st Div consisted of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Regt, Arty Regt, and the Signal Bn. Div departed YANGGU 4 Jan 51. When it reached UNHUNG-NI 13 Jan 51, it moved east. When they sensed enemy to front PW was told by his Plat Ldr to join them in PYONGCHANG (DS4635). This Div was to avoid contact with the UN Forces as much as possible; By going around them and proceed south behind UN Lines and actively engage in guerrilla warfare in the KYUNGSAN NAM-PUKTO Area (TAEGU-PUSAN area).
PW does not know much of the infantry Regt’s except that they were approx 70% armed.
Arty Regt was in name only and had no Arty pieces.
Signal Bn (115 men) consisted of a wireless communication company with 6 Russian transreceivers and 20 men (12 men can operate equipment), a wire communication company, saw only 2 field phones and 35 men, a Hqs Co with 30 men, a Service Co with 30 men.
When this unit is tactically deployed a small detachment is attached to each Regt and Div Hqs. Signal Bn only 20% armed.
Clothing and Health: All were in winter clothing but PW estimates 10% of Div have been affected by cold weather and fell out. Those who were given permission to fall out were told to go back to YANGGU where a field hospital is located. Those who fell out on his own and left were marked as deserters.
Heard there was a straggler collecting point at YUCHON 8 KMs north of UNHUNG-NI
