FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0361) 18 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Source was cooperative during questioning but because of sickness his answers were not as concise and detailed as they would be under better circumstances
Reliability: Fair

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
7 Apr 50 - Conscripted, YONGCHONG GUN.
10 Apr 50 - Received two months training in SUKCHON GUN. Thereafter, PW with 350 other men were taken to P’YONGYANG by train. Spent less than a month in P’YONGYANG.
Moved from P’YONGYANG to SEOUL and from SEOUL to TAEJON by train. Unit moved by foot from TAEJON to NAKTONG River.
12 Aug 50 - Unit engaged UN Forces at NAKTONG River. Casualties: 3 officers, 6 NCO’s and 10 EM.
23 Sep 50 - PW’s unit with 10th Div withdrawing to WACHON-GUN. Marching time: 35 days. Unit did not recross 38th parallel.
1 Nov 50 - 10th Div departed KANGWON DO to move south.
15 Nov 50 - Contacted UN Forces and suffered some casualties.
10 Jan 51 - Arrived vic ANDONG GUN. All movement made on foot at night.
13 Jan 51 - PW fell ill and was left at UGOK-DONG.

4. ORGANIZATION:
10th Div consists of 24th, 27th, and 29th Regiments, an artillery regiment, and Ind Engr Bn.
Division Arty has 5 x 76mm How’s, however, no ammunition for these pieces.
Each Regiment composed of three Bn’s of approximately 400 men each. (Strength at time they were at 38th parallel)
No heavy weapons or automatic weapons.
Ind Engr Bn composed of 1st and 2nd Rifle Co’s, Bridge Co and Training Co, plus an additional 20 men who serve with Bn supply.

5. WEAPONS:
Rifle Co’s have Russian carbines; Bridge Company personnel have PPSH SMGs. Each man carried one hand grenade. Ind Engr Bn had 5 or 6 land mines, but has never used them.

8. SUPPLIES:
Ammo: Before departing WHACHONG-GUN, troops received 20 rounds of ammo each. Ox carts were utilized for transportation.
Food: Obtained in villages.

9. MOVEMENT:
PW’s unit moved as a unit and not in small groups. 10th Div arrived in YECHONG-GUN, north of HARI-MYON on 11 Jan 51. On 13 Jan 51, 27th and 29th Regiments contacted UN forces, 24th Regt was kept in reserve.

10. COMMUNICATIONS:
Bn had three Russian-made wire field phones. These were used between companies.

11. MORALE:
Morale in general low due to insufficient food and clothing, frostbite, and disease.

12. INTENTIONS:
Move to PUSAN via TAEGU.

13. REPLACEMENTS:
10th Div recruited approx 200 untrained men before departing from 38th parallel.
