FIELD REPORT (2 Div - LDI - 0047) 27 November 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW is not familiar with names and places of immediate battle area.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
251800 Nov 50, 2nd and 3rd Bn’s, 359th Regt were ordered to cross CHONG CHON River (vic of BV4921) and secure hill directly across, by surrounding UN troops.
2nd Bn moved out as leading element, followed by 3rd Bn. Each Bn approx 500 men. 500 meters from the river, the 2nd & 3rd Bn separated and crossed at two points about 200 meters apart.
2nd Bn left their Hvy Wpns Co behind (Vic of BV4922) to cover attack while fording the river.
The Hvy Wpns Co had 4x82mm mortars placed behind first ridge and 4xHMGs on top of it.
After crossing river, 2nd Bn received heavy mortar and arty fire. PW’s Co could not reach objective. His Co grounded arms and surrendered to US troops.
NOTE: See attached overlay for enemy position, exact location could not be obtained. PW was not familiar with names of places and villages in battle area.

b. Equipment:
Breakdown of CCF equipment: Inf Co (120 men): 3 Rifle Plat, 1 Mortar Plat. Rifle Plat: 3 LMGs with 1000 rds per gun; 15 rifles with 65 rds per man; 4 hand grenades per man; 6 SMGs. Mortar Plat: 3x60mm mortars, 2 hand grenades per man. Hvy Wpns Co: 4 Plats; 4 Sqds to a Plat. Company: 4 HMGs; 4x82mm mortars; 9 US automatic rifles; 3 hand grenades per man. Artillery Co: 2 Cos to a Regt; 4x92mm (Jap mode), 4 Hvy mortars (mm unk) approx 4 in. dia.; 15 rifles; 32 horses. Artillery Bn: 1 Arty Bn to a Div; 6 Mt Arty mm unk, approx 3 in.; 6 Hvy mortars (size unk); 2 hand grenades per man.
PW observed all their artillery pieces and mortars 18 Nov 50.

c. Communications:
Signals still in use by CCF troops. Whistle - short - long blast (friend or foe) short long blast (Reply by person challenged). Flag - Red for odd days of month; white for even days of month; flag waved in circular motion above head, if friendly troops, answer by waving correct color flag. Flash light-Flash light used by the dot dash system. Communication between Bn and Regt is by radio or telephone. Type of radio not known but radio has range of 12-13 Kms and carried on backs of signal men. Communication between Co and Bn is by runners. Runners identified by the weapon he carries. Only runners are issued the old Jap Cavalry Rifle with the no-detachable bayonet.

e. Supply:
Supply route cut by air attack. Food is very short. Troops eat whatever they can get from villages.
There is no source of ammo. They only have what they carry.
