As of Sep 50, there were no Arty pieces in the Arty Regts.

PW cooperative but confused in names and dates.

Information seems reliable.

Received 2 months of training at P’YONGYANG.

Approx 650 Arty Regt troops retreated from KURYONG through the SOBAEK Mt Range and TAEBAEK Mt range to YANGGU.

Names of villages passed were unknown. PW stated that out of the 650 personnel approx 550 arrived at YANGGU. Many deserted or were taken ill. PW heard that Arty pieces were buried near the NAKTONG River (exact location unknown) after taking out the breaches.

Between d/u Nov 50 to 25 Dec the 10th Div was at the YANGGU HWACHON (CT8617), KUMHWA (CT6640) axis, staging guerrilla warfare on UN forces:

PW deserted his unit on the night of 16 Jan 51 and surrendered to the village police 17 Jan 51.

5. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES: as of 16 Jan 51

PW last saw the 10th Div on 16 Jan 51 at WOLCHON NI, heading toward ANDONG (DR6545) which was the 10th Div objective.

6 days before arriving at WOLCHON NI PW’s unit by passed the 2nd Div and 6th Div which were 4 Km apart at an unknown place.

25 Dec 50 at HWACHON, PW heard rumors that the 27th Div will stay at HWACHON while the 10th Div proceeded S of the 38th parallel.

10th Div would take ANDONG and engaged in guerrilla warfare, disrupting communication and supply routes.

PW heard from the Plat Ldr that between Nov and 25 Dec 50 at the YANGGU-KUMHWA-HWACHON axis, 800 recruits, age 35 to 40 and 600 former Ind 39th Regt personnel were placed in the 10th Div.

Recruits did not receive any training nor were they issued weapons.

Ammo was last issued at HWACHON 25 Dec 50 with 8 days ration. When food was gone, they foraged food from evacuated villages.

As of Dec 50 at KURYONG, the Arty Regt did not have any Arty pieces.

Arty Regt at present was performing the same duties as any Inf Unit because they have no Arty.

While at KURYONG, UN aircraft were most feared by battery personnel. When they spot any planes, the men camouflage the guns with grass and pine branches.

One Arty Btry had 4 Arty pieces which were 5m apart. The distance between Co’s were 2 to 4 Kms.

The morale in PW’s unit was low because they lacked food and ammo.

11. UN PW’s:

PW saw 25 ROK PW’s at an unknown place on d/u Jan 51. PW heard that these men will be returned to their unit or if they want to stay in the NKA they would be accepted. Reason for releasing the ROK’s was unknown. If N. Koreans who were in the S. Korean Army were captured, they would be forced into the NKA.

13. CCF:

PW did not see any CCF troops but heard on 25 Dec at HWACHON that CCF would come to aid the NKA.

PW stated that troops travelled during the night and at day times they slept. Usually, a Regt would occupy a village and sleep in houses; they were not permitted to go outside during daylight hours.

When they were on a mountain, they usually camouflaged themselves with grass or branches. They would sleep in caves under branches or near large rocks. Troops usually travel through Mts and camp near rivers.

15. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:

a. PW voluntarily surrendered to the police because he was disgusted with the NKA.

b. Did you see any United Nations leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts?
