PW appeared in good physical condition; was relaxed and cooperative. Information considered reliable.

Casualties were received in ground combat and UN air attacks.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
PW last saw the CP of 4th Regt located at OUIGONG-NI (DR5094) 13 Jan 51.
Mission of II Corps was to infiltrate behind UN lines and engage in guerrilla warfare.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW inducted into NKA 2nd Div, 4th Regt on 5 May 48 at HOERYONG (EB6928). PW took training for about a year, and o/a 1 May 49, was transported by rail with 2nd Div to HAMHUNG (CV7817), arrived 2 days later. PW received training again and went through maneuvers several times (no tanks or artillery were used).
O/a 1 Jul 49, PW was promoted to Sgt (sqd ldr). 14 Jun 50, 4th Regt, 2nd Div travelled by rail to KUMHWA (CT6640), arriving the following day. From KUMHWA unit moved over mountain trails, arriving at an unknown town approx 12 km N of CH’UNCH’ON (CS8893) o/a 20 Jun 50.
25 Jun 50, PW heard from his Bn CO that the ROKA had declared war on the NKA. Same day 4th Regt began to move southward. Engaged with UN forces and passed through the following places:

2 Jul 50, PW was wounded in shoulder and leg. Was hospitalized for about 21/2 months in hospitals in WONJU (CS6227), SUWON (CS2428), SEOUL, HAMHUNG (CV7817) and P’YONGYANG (BU2019).
13 Sep 50, PW was released at P’YONGYANG. Same day, together with 300 ex-patients, PW travelled by rail to SEOUL, arriving o/a 15 Sep 50. After detraining at SEOUL, he heard a rumor that all the 300 ex-patients were to form a new unit. However, this was not done due to lack of weapons.
Sep 50, PW retreated northward together with a mass of NKA troops, marching at night and hiding in mountains during the day. 1 Nov PW arrived at KANGGYE (BA9837) and there rejoined 4th Regt. 4th Regt had suffered approx 60% casualties. However, no replacements arrived.
20 Nov 50, PW marched with 4th Regt over mountain trails to YONGWON (BU8912), arriving o/a 25 Nov 50. Mission of 4th Regt to infiltrate UN lines and engage in guerrilla warfare.
27 Nov 50 unit marched further south, infiltrating UN lines in the following places:

O/a 13 Jan 51 4th Regt arrived at KUMGONG-NI (DR4892). Same day, PW was separated from his unit because of sickness.
17 Jan 51, PW was captured by 32nd Regt while recuperating in a farmer’s house.

6. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Men of 4th Regt were given ammo in accordance with the T/O & E before the offensive started. After that, each man had to obtain ammo supply from the dead or go without any.
There was no organized supply system.
Food was obtained by confiscation.

7. MORALE:
Morale of troops of 4th Regt was very low because of lack of food and clothing and also because of effectiveness of UN arty and air attacks, feared most.

8. CCF:
PW once observed an undetermined number of CCF troops marching southward from KANGGYE (BA9837) o/a 20 Nov 50. PW heard from other NKA troops that the CCF volunteered to fight in order to save KOREA.

9. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW was captured
b. Did you see any United Nations leaflets, or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. Yes.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. PW read leaflet which informed him to surrender and which promised good treatment and food, according to the Geneva Convention.
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. Negative.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. Soldiers of 4th Regt discussed contents of leaflet and said that it was nothing but propaganda. They all stated that they would be tortured slowly (pulling out finger nails, cutting off ears, noses, legs and arms) to death by UN forces if they surrendered or were captured.

10. EXPOSURE CASUALTIES:
Approx 90% - 95% of the men of 4th Regt were unfit to fight because of frostbite. Approx one or two soldiers froze to death every day.
