4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS: (as of 14 Jan 51)
27th Regt Hq moving S through the mountains approx 12 km East of YECH’ON.
Objective of 27th and 29th Regts was ANDONG (DR7546).
27th Regt marched at night only, slept during the day in villages whenever possible, otherwise in the mountains. In either event they warm themselves with charcoal fires. Charcoal is confiscated from the villages.
When a few UN aircraft approach and seem likely to pass overhead, the troops freeze motionless” in hopes of not being observed from the air. This ruse generally is effective. When a large formation of aircraft approach, they scamper to nearby ditches and culverts to avoid direct hits.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted into the NKA at SUKCHON (YD2565) on 8 April 50. There he received 1½ months of basic training consisting of close order drill, calesthenics, and the manual of arms. He was then assigned as a rifleman in the 29th Regt of the 10th Div.
PW left SUKCHON during Jul 50, marched with the 29th Regt for one day and deserted from the NKA. Apprehended two days later by elements of the 27th Regt, 10th Div, severely beaten, and assigned to the Communications Company, 27th Regt (somewhere in SOUTH KOREA).
PW marched (at night only) with the 27th Regt, southward until the Regt arrived in the SOBAEK SAN mountain ranges during Sep 50. At that time the NKA started to retreat. PW marched (during daylight) northward through the TAEBAEK SAN mountain range with approx 700 other soldiers (remnants of the 27th Regt), arriving in the mountains approx 6 km northwest of HWACH’ON (CT8617) during Nov 50. While retreating NKA troops marched four abreast when the width of mountain trails permitted, but much of the time the narrow trails and rugged terrain necessitated marching single file.
Early part of Dec 50 27th Regt remnants successfully attacked HWACH’ON, wresting it from ROK Army units. PW entered HWACH’ON with 27th Regt Hq o/a 9 Dec 50.
PW left HWACH’ON o/a 11 Dec 50, marched with about 70 men of 27th Regt Hq, and arrived in the mountains approx 5 km southwest of CH’UNCHON (CS8893) o/a 13 Dec 50. PW entered CH’UNCHON with part of the 27th Regt Hq o/a 15 Dec 50. The 27th Regt Hq personnel marched during daylight only, remaining in tiny villages (3 to 15 houses) after dark.
PW left CH’UNCHON o/a 18 Dec 50, marched with part of the 27th Regt Hq (during night only) along the CH’UNCHON - SEOUL Highway, arriving at KAP’YONG (CS6987) o/a 20 Dec 50.
PW retreated from KAP’YONG o/a 27 Dec 50, marched with the 27th Regt Hq and arrived at CHICH’ON-NI (CT8209) o/a 30 Dec 50.
PW departed with the 27th Regt Hq from CHICH’ON-NI o/a 2 Jan 51, marched at night (sleeping in the mountains and in tiny villages during daytime), and arrived at a point in the mountains approx 13 km East of YECH’ON during the night of 14 Jan 51. There PW and his Sq Ldr deserted from the NKA by dropping behind as their unit proceeded.
On 15 Jan 51, PW and his Sqd Ldr voluntarily surrendered to ROK police in an unidentified village approx 12 km East of YECH’ON.
