FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1405) 22 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: PAK, Chang Su (朴昌洙) (박창수) (NKA)
RANK: None
ORGANIZATION: 43rd Div, 48th Regt, Political Section
DUTIES: Intelligence agent
EDUCATION: Primary School (6 years)
AGE: 37
OCCUPATION: Official of the Monopoly Bureau
ADDRESS: HWANGHAE DO, PYONGSAN GUN, KUMAN MYON, PILTAE RI, 556 (黃海道 平山郡 金岩面 ■■里)
DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: Captured at MUNMANG NI (CS 9528) on 191100 I Jan 51.
INTERROGATOR: C.S.I.
INTERROGATED AT: HAYANG (DQ 8374)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very evasive and was obviously attempting to confuse the interrogator. His replies were conflicting and sparse.
PW had a set of maps and notes on his person which are being translated by the Document Section of this organization.
PW was in civilian attire at time of capture.
Information seems unreliable.
Recommended for further interrogation.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH:
43rd Division was under the V Corps. PW heard this in Dec 50. PW did not know what other units were under the V Corps.
The 43rd Division was composed of the 57th Infantry Regiment. 68th Infantry Regiment and unknown other units.
The 68th Infantry Regt had 3 Infantry Battalions. 1 Operation Staff Section, 1 Political Defense Section, 1 Political Section, 1 Signal Section, 1 Medical Section, 1 Recon Section, and 1 Rear Hqs Section.
Each Battalion was composed of 3 Rifle Co’s.
Each Company was composed of 3 Rifle Platoons.
Each Platoon was composed of 3 Rifle squads.
The 68th Regiment had approximately 800 troops as of 17 Jan 51.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
On 15 Jan 51, the 68th Regiment Headquarters arrived at the “I-KOO” (二區) district of OKKYE RI (DS 0039). The units of the 68th Regt were located around OKYYE RI.
PW heard that the 68th Regiment will rest here for one month after the CCF arrives here.
The 67th Regiment was located in a village approximately 1 Km North of the WONJU Railroad Station (DS 0734).
PW heard from his friend on 14 Jan 51 that CCF Units have arrived in WONJU (DS0734).
On 17 Jan 51, PW was ordered by the Political Section Chief, 68th Regt to learn of UN troops strength and the number of people remaining in the villages in the CHUNGJU (DR 0797) Sector. PW was ordered to return in 5 days.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW was inducted into the NKA at PYONGSAN (DT 7637) on 11 Dec 50. PW was immediately assigned to the Political Section, 68th Regiment.
On 20 Dec 50, the 68th Regiment departed PYONGSAN and marched through CHORWON (CT 4225) and HOENSONG (DS 1049) and arrived at WONJU (DS 0734) o/a 13 Jan 51.
PW was ordered by his Political Section Chief, 65th Regiment to proceed to the CHUNGJU (忠州) Sector to find out the UN strength in that area.
PW was apprehended by ROK troops in MU■■ANG NI on 19 Jan 51.

6. PERSONALITIES:
LEE, Il Sung (phonetic), Political Staff Officer, 68th Regiment.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was procured locally from villages.
Ammo was brought with the unit. None issued since entering South Korea.

8. UN PW’S:
18 Dec 50, PW observed 8 US PW’s at SAMGA RI (삼가■). These PWs were questioned by the Political Staff Officer, 68th Regiment and were sent to the 43rd Division Headquarters.

9. SIGNAL INFORMATION:
PW observed 3 Field Telephones with the 68th Regiment.

10. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW was captured
b. Did you see any United Nations leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. Yes, He had leaflet number 1060 on his person when captured.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. The leaflet states: You are like a tool used by the Chinese and Russian government.
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. Negative.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. Negative.
