3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
100700 Jan 51, a guerrilla unit of about 300 men, called HUNG-PUN, entered and occupied the village of KONHAK TONG (DR3176) forcing the villagers to prepare good and lodging for them. PW, a farmer, was ordered to provide billets for 6 guerrillas.
112000 Jan 51, PW and 11 others (who were to act as bearers) were forced to accompany the guerrillas who marched on the road in a single file and arrived at KUNGTOGOL (DR3648) 120200 Jan 51. Here they were joined by approximately 300 more guerrillas who identified themselves as belonging to the FANG IL Unit. Both groups were also known as the CHIRI-SAN Guerrilla Unit. At 130500 Jan 51, the group departed KUNGTOGOL, and arrived at TOHYON (DR2077) 131700 Jan. On 140600 Jan, after having breakfast at 0400 and during the absence of the guards, subject and another person from the same village escaped and reported in at the KALPYONG-NI Police Station, which was about 2 Km away, at 141200 Jan 51.

b. Unit Organization:
PW’s guerrilla unit of 600 men which was also known as the CHIRI-SAN Guerrilla Unit was composed of the HUNG-PU and a KANG-IL Units. He stated that most of the troops were North Korean uniforms while some were civilian clothing.

c. Weapons:
Of the 600 guerrillas approximately 550 were armed while the rest who were bearers were unarmed. Arms consisted of one grease-gun (US), many M1 rifles, many carbines (number unknown), one LMG, one mortar (type unknown), Jap M-38 rifles, and PPSH SMGs. He observed all the guerrillas were supplied 5 to 6 cases of small-arm ammunition; 50 to 60 rounds per rifle were carried individually.

d. Other Units:
122000 Jan 51, when PW was resting in a house at KUNGTOGOL, one guerrilla told him that just at the moment, 1,000 NKA troops were passing by, and heading south. On the morning 13 Jan 51, when subject’s group had just started out from KUNGTOGOL for TOHYON, they passed groups of NKA troops whom PW estimated to number about 1,000 heading south and in the opposite direction from them. They were in small groups of tens and twenties, but stretched out for approximately four kilometers. These troops were observed armed with rifles and SMGs. No heavy weapons were observed.

e. Mission:
PW heard from one of the squad leaders that the mission of their guerrilla unit was to conduct guerrilla warfare. As such it was to enlist young men from villages in the vicinity to strengthen their unit. He did not know the operational area of the guerrilla unit nor did he know where and from whom the unit received its orders. He heard the platoon leader telling his men that they were to attack KALPYONG-NI (DR2571) in the near future, date unknown. The platoon leader asked him the distance between MUNGYONG (DR2166) and TOHYON. The reason for this unknow.

f. Food:
Food such as rice and meat were confiscated from villagers.

g. UN Prisoners:
13 Jan 51, when subject’s group was coming down from a hill near YOHYON, he saw one American PW standing by a fire not too far away, guarded by guerrillas whom he was informed as members of the KANG-IL Unit. Although subject had seen only one PW, he later heard a squad leader telling his men that there actually were two American prisoners. The PW he saw was not tied nor mistreated.
He also heard the squad leader discussing the raid they made on TANYANG and CHANGNIM-NI(DR3386) at an unknown date. He stated that 100 ROK police were captured at CHANGNIM-NI, date unknown.
