PW did not seem very intelligent; hesitant at times. Reliability - fair.
10 Dec 50 - Conscripted with approx 1000 conscripts. These conscripts were assigned to the 25th, 27th and 29th Regts of the 10th Div, II Corps.
PW and 700 men were assigned to the 29th Regt.
These recruits received orientation on infantry tactics till departure.
18 Dec 50 - 1700 hrs the 29th Regt departed KUMHWA GUN (金化郡) on foot to YONGHWA. Heard that 25th Regt remained at YONGHWA while 27th Regt departed for place unk.
23 Dec 50 - 29th Regt arrived YONGHWA and departed for ANDONG (安東) after a day’s rest. Took mountainous route and said regt was strafed by aircraft and suffered heavy casualties.
17 Jan 51 - PW deserted and surrendered to Security police at place called SHINGJONG.

Approx 500 (originally 1000 but 50% died or injured by UN air strikes and frostbite).

3rd Bn: 2 HMGs, 2/60mm Mortars, 20 PPSH SMGs, 300 Russ rifles (including captured US M1 Rifles) and 1-2 hand grenades per man, 30-40 rds of ammo per rifle.
Seriously wounded were left on field due to lack of aid men. Those evacuated were transported to villages on oxen.
Morale was low due to forced conscription. 80% conscripts.
If safe conduct leaflets were dropped and they promised safe treatment the great majority would desert.
