2. ASSESSMENT:
PW spoke freely, but made contradictory statements. Poor memory of dates and location, Reliability, poor.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
28 Aug 50: Inducted into the NKA at CH’ORWON (鐵原). Received basic training with the 32nd Div, Ind Bn until 5 Oct 50.
5 Oct 50: 32nd Div started its retreat to MANP’OJIN (滿浦鎭) passing through the following places: WICH’ON (渭川), SINANJU (新安州), AND KANGGYE (江界).
O/a 5 Nov 50: Arrived at MANP’OJIN after being separated from this unit enroute.
O/a 11 Nov 50: Picked up by the local police (because he was traveling alone in violation of existing NK order restricting such movements) and turned over to the 26th Brig, 5th Bn, Mortar Co located in mountains approx 12 km NE of MANP’OJIN.
O/a 15 Nov 50: 26th Brig entrained at MANPOJIN and traveled for two days under cover of darkness arriving at SUNCH’ON (順川).
O/a 17 Nov 50: 26th Brig started for P’YONGYANG arriving in the vicinity approx ten days later, remaining in the 2nd RR tunnel on the RR line between P’YONGYANG and SUNCHON for five days.
O/a 3 Dec 50: The 5th Bn, 26th Brig headed for KYONGNUNG (庚陵) passing the northern outskirts of P’YONGYANG and arrived approx ten days later. The purpose of this march was the attack on the Security Force in the vicinity.
O/a 13 Dec 50: Upon arrival, the Bn found no enemy but they stayed in vicinity moving from village to village until 27 Dec 50.
O/a 27 Dec 50: The 5th Bn marched to CHINNAMPO.
6 Jan 51: Approx 60 men from the Bn marched to CHODO (猪島) and engaged approx 50 Security Police.
7 Jan 51: PW was captured with 26 others at about 0900 and escorted on board waiting worships.

5 Bn’s of approx 390 each.
PW actually saw only the 3rd Bn, however, heard that the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Bns were in vicinity of P’YONGYANG. 3rd Bn in CHINNAMPO.
Equipment: (As of 6 Jan 51)
26th Brigade, 5th Bn, Mortar Co

2 x 45 mm Mortars
20 US M-1 Rifles (1,000 rds of ammo)
30 Grenade
Bn HMG Co had 2 HMGs. Approx 60% of riflemen had Russian rifles. Engineers had shovels and picks, no weapons. Mortar Co was the only Co with M-1 rifles.

c. Communication Equipment:
4 field telephones observed with Signal Plat at KYONGNUNG.

d. Supply and ammo:
All clothing was issued at MANP’OJIN. Mortar was issued in a small village (location unk) enroute to P’YONGYANG. M-1 Rifles were issued at KYONGNUNG o/a 4 Dec 50. Small arms ammo was issued in vicinity of P’YONGYANG. Troops were equipped after arrival at SUNCHON. They left MANPOJIN empty-handed.
Food was acquired locally from the villagers with whom troops were quartered. the troops carried no emergency rations.

e. Morale and Discipline:
Daily orientation was given troops encouraging them to abide by the regulations, never to retreat, to conserve ammo and maintain and care for their weapons daily. PW states that morale was low due to shortage of rations and the desire to return home to see their loved ones. However, discipline was maintained by officer surveillance over the individual’s actions.
