1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was fairly intelligent and cooperative. Reliability – Fair.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
28 Oct 50 – 25 Nov 50: Five NKA EH came to PW’s house and told him to join the NK Volunteer Corps. They threatened to kill him if he did not do so. PW said, he was under age and week. PW was taken to AEJON-MYON (애전면) near KAMGGYE (江界), KOREA, where guerrilla forces were organized and was assigned to the 3rd Brig, 8th Bn, 3rd Co, 3rd Plat, 2nd Sqd on 25 Nov 50.
30 Nov 50: 3rd Brig left AEJON-MYON (애전면), KOREA. PW fell back because of trench foot.
10 Jan 51: Arrived CHONGSON. Heard that the main body of the 3rd Brig was at YONGWOL (寧越), KOREA then.
11 Jan 51: Captured by a ROK unit.

Battalions in 3rd Brig were broken down as follows:
One Bn consisted of three companies, each of which had a strength of 55-60 man. Each Co consisted of three platoons, each of which had the strength of 17 men. Each platoon consisted of three squads, each of which had the strength of 5 men. In addition to the above, there were one rear echelon unit, which had a strength of 30-40 men, Bn Hq of 10-20 men and Racon unit of 17 men. Total: approx 250.

5. PERSONALITIES:
CH’OE, Pyong Gyu (崔炳圭) (최병규), 35, Bn Political Committee man of 3rd Brig.
Remarks: He was formerly a mayor (place unknown).

6. CODE NAME:
3rd Brig was redesigned CHILSAN Unit (智異山部隊) on 30 Nov 50 at AEJON-MYON (애전면), KOREA. Redesignated KAYASAN Unit (伽倻山部隊) 20 Dec 50 when the Brig was moving south.

Numerals used in the above mentioned code designation were used also for APO numbers.

7. INTENTIONS:
3rd Brig was to move south as quickly as possible in order to “liberate” as many Koreans as possible. Destination was unknown.

8. MORALE:
High: 5th Bn because majority of the men were healthy.
7th Bn because Bn Commander had good leadership qualities and had sufficient food for his men.
Recon Unit because everybody was healthy, well clothed and had sufficient food.
Brig Hq because everybody was well educated, clothed and fed.
Low: 3rd Bn because of lack of clothes and majority of the man suffered from trench foot.
6th Bn – Reason was same as above.
Bear Echelon Unit because this unit consisted of draftees.

9. REPLACEMENTS:
3rd Brig had no replacement system. Men who became sick or suffered from trench foot rare left ■…■ men the Brig moved south on 30 Nov 50. About four times each company received five or six man between 30 Nov 50 to Jan 51. These reinforcements were said to have come from the rear echelon unit.

10. SUPPLY:
Each man carried as many rations as possible. ■…■ troops ran out of rations they went into towns and villages and confiscated foodstuffs. Each man carried an average of 30 rounds of ammunition for small areas.
