3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
3 Jul 50: Conscripted into NKA as Pvt at SARIWON (沙里院). Assigned to 78th Ind Regt and received Arty training for approx 1½ months.
25 Aug 50: 2nd Bn, 78th Ind Regt advanced to PONGSAN-GUN (■山郡). PW promoted to Jr Sgt and was assigned as assistant antitank Sqd Idr.
18 Sep 50: 78th Ind Regt advanced to SINCH'ON (新村), SEOUL.
19 Sep 50: While 78th Ind Regt advanced to INCH'ON (仁川), PW and one other Pvt were separated from the unit accidentally. Under Arty fire from UN ships, they retreated north and met the 226th Brig at YONCH'ON (連川). PW was assigned to the Brig. Promoted to Sgt and assigned as 45mm antitank Sqd Ldr.
2 Oct 50: 226th Brig withdrew to SINUIJU (新義州) taking approx 20 days.
23 Oct 50: 226th Brig crossed the YALU River and entered ANTUNG (安東), MANCHURIA. Immediately left ANTUNG (安東) by train for MANP'OJIN (滿浦鎭) via MUKDEN and MEIHOKOU (梅河口), MANCHURIA.
30 Oct 50: Arrived MANP'OJIN (滿浦鎭). There, 226th Brig was organized into two units: 26th Brig which chiefly consisted of trained man, and activated unit believed to have remained in MANCHURIA. This latter unit consisted of untrained man.
6 Nov 50: 26th Brig advanced to HUICH'ON (熙川) 5th Bn, 26th Brig.
30 Nov 50: Advanced to KUNU-RI (軍■里).
6 Dec 50: Advanced to YONGBYONG. (寧辺).
15 Dec 50: 26th Brig entered P'YONGYANG. The duty of the 5th Bn while advancing from SINCH'ON to P'YONGYANG was to reorganize Communist labor parties and assemble all remnants.
22 Dec 50: Advanced to YOUNGGANG (■■). 5th Bn was responsible for the security of YONGGANG.
4 Jan 51: Advanced to CHINNAMP'O (鎭南浦).
7 Jan 51: Captured by the Korean Security Force whose position was on the South side of TAEDONG River (大■江).

c. Weapons: (26th Brig)
45mm antitank gun platoon had no antitank guns. It only had seven 7.62mm MDSSIN-KAGANT M1891/30 rifles and two M-1 Rifles.

d. Unit History:
26th Brig was organized 30 Oct 50. It consisted of well-trained troops, ages 17 to 35. These troops were formerly in the 226th Brig.
PW last heard that the 26th Brig assembled at P'YONGYANG 18 Dec 50. PW also heard that the 26th Brig Hq was located there but he was not sure.
PW did not know the activities of the 26th Brig after his last observation of the Brig 18 Dec 50.
226th Brig was a Marine unit. After the dissolution of the 226th (Marine) Brig, the 26th Brig was called the 26th Coast Guard Brigade.

g. Disposition:
26th Brig located in P'YONGYANG when last observed. When last observed, 5th Bn was located in CHINNAMP'O with a strength of approx 400 troops. 1st Bn in-area approx 16 km east and west, 8 km north and south of CHUNGHWA (中和), and 3rd Bn area around ANAK (安岳).

h. Intentions:
PW heard that the 26th Brig was to guard the coast but he did not know the exact area that was to be guarded. 5th Bn was to guard the coastal area from CHINNAMP'O to ONJONG (溫井) vicinity.
PW heard that 1st, 2nd, 3rd and EMG Co of the 5th Bn proceeded to an unknown destination 5 Jan 51.
5th Bn Hq, Service Plats, Arty Btry and 82mm Mortar Co remained in CHINNAMP'O. Arty Btry and 82mm Co were ordered to attack the ROK Security Force at CHODO (猪島). The troops were armed with 4 PPSH submachine guns, 10 M-1 Rifles, 50x7.62mm M1891/30 rifles, 4x6.5mm MEIJI 38 (1905), and 4x7.62mm "TOKAESU" TT 1930 automatic pistols. No mortars were used due to the lack of mortar shells.
The order was given at 1800 hours 6 Jan 51. At departure at 1830 hours, a Sr Col from the staff of the 26th Brig was seen. This Sr Col accompanied the task force but was later wounded and was sent back. The task force consisted of 68 troops and a Sr Lt in command. This Sr Lt was captured with PW.
This mission failed. Twenty-eight troops were captured out of 68. PW did not know what happened to the remaining troops. PW observed 20 killed.

i. Morale:
Morale was low, due to lack of weapons. First direct combat.

j. Evacuation and Treatment of Wounded:
Bn aid station was located at Bn Hq and PW heard that minor wounds were treated there. Heard that the seriously wounded were sent back to the Brigade hospital.

k. Supply:
Each man carried 3 days' rations and 100 rounds of ammunition for small arms. Also one hand grenade.

4. GENERAL:

Approx 10 Russian military officers were observed in SARIWON (沙里院) on the street, Aug 50. Rank of these officers unknown.

PW heard a large trench was being dug in a plain in the vicinity of PONGSAN (鳳山). This was for the purpose of combating enemy paratroopers.
PW also heard that 45mm antitank guns and 120mm howitzer M1938 (number unknown) were set up approx 6km east of CHINNAMP'O. They were believed to be located on a hill located approx 1 km north of the TAEDONG River (大同江) bank.
